May 4 was chosen as the date to celebate International Firefighter' Day as it is also the Feast Day of St Florian, the Patron Saint of Firefighters.

A Roman officer known for his courage and leadership, St Florian is remembered for his role in organising firefighting brigades and for standing firm in the face of danger.

His legacy lives on in firefighters around the world today.

⚠️ STATEWIDE TORNADO DRILL CANCELLED

The National Weather Service has cancelled today’s statewide tornado drill due to the potential for severe weather across the region.

Because of this, Callaway County outdoor warning sirens will NOT be sounded at 11:00 AM today for the drill.

While the drill has been cancelled, this is a good reminder to review your tornado safety plans.

Folks, hopefully everyone has already gotten what they need so they can hunker down over the weekend for this storm. Between snowfall and the cold please be prepared! Stay safe out there!

🚨 MAJOR WINTER STORM EXPECTED 🚨
When: Saturday through Sunday
Dates: 1/24/26 – 1/25/26

Ok folks, so here’s the deal. The team and I have discussed and analyzed this storm very thoroughly. We aren’t going to buy into to those crazy extreme snow maps out there floating around. We have voted, and together we stand by our ONE and ONLY snow total map shown below again for your reference. So we will NOT be changing our going forecast totals!

So here’s our low down in a nutshell. First let’s simplify timing as a more generalized idea. This will come in from the W/SW and expand E/NE with time. It’s going to be fighting a lot of dry air with the first wave so NOT everyone gets in on the action. The first wave is much of a lighter impact based on regional coverage. Then a lull or intermittent breaks comes in towards late afternoon/evening before the next real batch of moisture comes in Saturday Night into Sunday.

So as a generalized start time let’s just go with 4:00am Saturday to ~12:00pm Saturday for this batch of moisture. Again remember, this is the not the most concerning batch but will still have impacts especially those further west and south. So those to the SW can expect the earlier start time while those to further to the East on our map a Mid to Early Afternoon start time.

It will be scattered and light to moderate snow so some will miss much of the first batch. The next bigger push Saturday Night comes in between 9:00pm Saturday and 2:00am Sunday. This batch gets most everyone and will continue through Sunday PM tapering off to just light snow showers and eventually flurries towards evening.

***Widespread Power Outages Do NOT Look Likely*** This is a powdery snow and will not stick very well to them. Sure, there could be some isolated outages but not very widespread. The more concerning factor is the Dangerous Cold!

Models have stayed impressively consistent, and Missouri is sitting right in the sweet spot with major impacts to travel expected.

Again, this is mostly an ALL SNOW event for pretty much our entire viewing region. Maybe mixing with some sleet at times but that’s mainly over SE Missouri, as we’ve already stated, Icing is NOT a concern. Northern areas will see more variability in snow totals due to dry air fighting the moisture feed.

Impacts:
• Major statewide travel disruptions
• Flight cancellations likely
• Roads will become dangerous, especially Saturday night
• Dry, powdery snow = extra slick conditions
• Travel strongly discouraged if avoidable

If you must travel: a full tank of gas, an emergency kit, charged phone, blankets, and warm gear are non-negotiable. You could be stranded for hours out in the dangerous cold.

Bottom line:
This storm will NOT miss most the HLEW Viewing Region with the North seeing the lowest impacts with more major the further south you go. Everyone should be prepared by now. Please. If you must go out in the snow to play, limit your time to 20 Minutes or Less. This Dangerous Cold is something NOT to be messed with!

Stay Safe.
