One year ago today, the City of Garland welcomed The Big Hat sculpture to Downtown Garland! 🤠
At 20 feet long, 16 feet wide, 6 feet tall and 15 feet in the air, it’s the largest cowboy hat in Texas.
Designed by Mello Signs of Fort Worth, The Big Hat was awarded first place in the Freestanding Signs category at the Texas Sign Association’s 2026 Annual Design Contest.
More than a piece of art, The Big Hat is a Texas-sized symbol of Garland’s official designation as the Cowboy Hat Capital of Texas. The Texas Legislature gave Garland the title in 2013 to recognize the city’s three hat manufacturers, which collectively produce more than 1 million cowboy hats each year.
Since 1938, hats made in Garland have been worn by Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and George W. Bush, music legends from George Strait to Beyoncé and even the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
