This introductory class is designed to help teens and tweens become familiar with sewing machine basics, including stitches and construction techniques. Create your own fabric wallet and gain the foundational skills needed to start your sewing journey.

Join us on Friday, June 26 at 3 pm in the Community Room to hear Heather Atwood on the artist Joseph Solman, who once said “my biggest fear is being a footnote in Mark Rothko’s life.”

Living and working in New York City in the early part of the 20th century, Solman was at the center of the New York City art scene. He experienced first hand the dynamics at play that created the later work of Adolph Gottlieb and Mark Rothko, two of the three artists featured in the Cape Ann Museum exhibit this summer.

Atwood will screen her Color of Light video on Solman, who summered on Cape Ann starting in the early 1950’s, and discuss his relationship with Milton Avery, Adolph Gottlieb, and Mark Rothko.

It's not every day that teens and tweens ask for a broom-making workshop, so when you asked, we listened! 🧹

Visiting from Salem, MA are our friends from The Witchery who will be teaching us how to make a classic besom-style broom from scratch using natural materials. Construct the base of your broom, then decorate the broom with a selection of charms and ribbon. Have fun being crafty while learning an entirely new skill!

On this day in Gloucester history:

As we prepare for the Battle of Gloucester reenactment at Stage Fort Park today, take a look at another time it was reenacted 101 years ago in 1925! The anniversary celebration was also held at Stage Fort Park and included speeches by local and state officials, poetry readings, and patriotic music performed by the Gloucester Cadet Band. A large parade through the city streets followed the reenactment.
