Those brown seed heads you're about to cut…don’t!

Did you know they really are a bird feeder?

Coneflowers, black-eyed Susans and sunflowers have lost their colors by now. And to many, they are looking ā€œdead.ā€

But to a goldfinch, they're just getting good. Finches cling to the heads and pick the seeds out one by one.

The dried stems do a second job.
Seeds that drop feed ground-feeding birds such as sparrows and juncos later in the fall. The standing stems also catch leaves at their base, where insects spend the winter.

Nothing here costs money. It's a chore you get to skip!

Leave the seed heads standing through winter.

If you want the bed to look tidy, cut a clean edge along the front and let the back stay wild.

Save the cleanup for spring, when new growth starts to push up.

In other words…let them be!
