Just after midnight on May 26, 2026, the Hammond Police Department responded to assist the Indiana State Police during an incident that resulted in an officer-involved shooting investigation.
The incident occurred during a traffic stop on Interstate 94 eastbound near mile marker 2.4, just east of the Indiana/Illinois state line in the area of Indianapolis Boulevard. During the encounter, shots were fired and an Indiana State Police trooper was struck by the suspect.
The trooper was transported for medical treatment and is currently reported to be in stable condition.
Personnel from the Hammond Police Department, Lake County Sheriff’s Department, and the Indiana State Police responded to the scene. No additional officers were injured during the incident.
At this time, there is no threat to the public.
The Indiana State Police is the lead investigating agency for this incident. Due to the ongoing investigation, eastbound and westbound lane closures in the area are expected to remain in place for an extended period of time this morning. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
