“Every year it got worse.”

Think about those words for a moment.

Imagine living every day wondering what might set someone off. Worrying about the people you love because they've been threatened, being denied medical care, and trying to figure out how to survive a situation that others may not even know exists.

Now imagine the people around you have no idea.

This is the reality of domestic violence that we don't always see. And it's why leaving isn't as simple as so many people think.

For Week 2 of our Domestic Violence Awareness Month campaign, we're asking you to KNOW THE DANGERS and recognize the fear behind everyday survival.

Danita bravely shared her story because what people couldn't see was very real. Her words are a reminder that we can't always tell what someone is going through just by looking at them.

We have to look beyond what we see, listen without judgment, and stop asking why someone doesn't leave. Instead, we need to start asking what they need to be safe.

The Hammond Sportsplex was full of energy Friday night as Paladin teams from across the Region hit the court for a night of competition, community, and plenty of smiles! The event brought everyone together, and plans are already underway for next year!

Paladin brought athletes and community members together for its Basketball Showcase Showdown, celebrating teamwork, inclusion, and friendly competition. The event highlighted the talents of athletes of all abilities while bringing everyone together through their shared love of basketball.

Danita’s Story, Part 2 💜

In our earlier post, we talked about red flags that can be mistaken for love, concern, or protection. In this video, Danita shares what that looked like in her own life.

Looking back, with distance and healing, she can now recognize the warning signs she couldn’t see while she was living through them.

Listen to her story. Do any of those moments feel familiar? Have you found yourself explaining away something that didn’t feel right?

You don’t have to have all the answers today. Sometimes, recognizing your own experience in someone else’s story is where understanding begins.

This campaign is part of a larger effort at the Hammond Police Department. While we’re helping our community recognize the signs of abuse, we’re also training our officers and using what we learn to improve how we respond to domestic violence. This is not just a “month” for us, we’re committed to continuing that work beyond October.

The Paladin, Inc. Showcase Showdown brought our department and community together for an incredible evening of basketball, cheerleading, teamwork, and fun! 🏀🚔

Our officers had a great time hitting the court, cheering on the athletes, and sharing plenty of laughs and memorable moments throughout the evening.
