Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. The Juneteenth flag symbolizes a new beginning and new opportunities for all emancipated Americans, especially those in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. Today we honor the history, achievements, and contributions of Black Americans while reflecting on the work that remains to eliminate discrimination and expand opportunity for all.

As an openly gay Black man, Rustin faced discrimination throughout his life, yet remained committed to advancing equality and human rights for all. His leadership in organizing the 1963 March on Washington demonstrated the power of nonviolent activism and collective action. Today, his legacy serves as a reminder that protecting civil rights requires both perseverance and the courage to challenge injustice.
