☎️ Why Do 9-1-1 Call Takers Ask So Many Questions?
When you call 9-1-1, you may wonder why we ask so many questions, especially during an emergency. These questions are part of the All Callers Interrogation, a series of basic questions our call takers learn during their certification training to help determine the nature of the emergency and get the appropriate help on the way.
Here’s why these questions are so important:
☎️ Location: We need to know the address or location of the emergency so we can send the appropriate responders—Police, Fire, or EMS.
☎️ Callback Number: If we get disconnected, we need a way to call you back.
☎️ Type of Emergency: Knowing what is happening helps us ask the appropriate follow-up questions, whether it’s a fire, a medical emergency, or another situation requiring assistance.
☎️ Additional Information & Reassurance: Your answers can provide valuable information to first responders before and upon arrival. Asking questions also helps us build rapport with you, keep you engaged, and provide instructions when appropriate.
🚨 And one more thing! While those 9-1-1 television shows may be exciting to watch, real-life emergency communications work a little differently. We don’t physically respond to the scene—our amazing Police Officers, Firefighters, and EMS personnel do!
While we’re asking you questions, we’re also dispatching help. These things often happen simultaneously, so please don’t assume that answering our questions is delaying the response.
