The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for South Kona and Ka`u Districts through this evening.

A Flood Advisory means minor flooding is imminent or occurring.

Due to the Flood Advisory, be advised:

Flooding can be life-threatening. Residents in flood prone areas are asked to remain alert for flooding conditions.
Please drive with caution. Be on the alert for run-off, ponding of water, debris, and poor visibility.

Do not attempt to cross flowing water in a vehicle or on foot; turn around, don’t drown.

You will be informed should conditions change.

County of Hawaii Parks & Recreation Department reports Mahukona Wharf and Honaunau Boat Ramp remain closed today.

There are no other beach parks or road closures reported at this time.

This is a Flood Advisory and Highway Closure information Update for Thursday September 10th at 5:30 am.
The National Weather Service issued a Flood Advisory for parts of Hawaii Island last night and that advisory has expired as of 5:15 this morning.
Throughout the night, parts of the Kau district experienced constant rainfall that included periods of heavy showers. As a result, Highway 11 was closed to all traffic due to flooding in the area of Kawaa Flats between Naalehu and Pahala.
At this time the flood waters have drained, and State Highway crews are working to clear the roadway of any debris and runoff. Highway 11 is open to all traffic; however, motorists are advised to drive with caution as crews are working to clear hazards.
The current forecast is for rain to continue throughout today and expected to be light with occasional moderate showers.
All schools in the Kau district are open today.
Please drive carefully and anticipate possible ponding and runoff and possible road closures.
Continue to monitor local radio broadcasts for official advisories in your area.
Conditions will be monitored and you will be kept informed of any developments.

The National Weather Service has cancelled the Flash Flood Warning for Ka`u District and has issued a Flood Advisory.

A Flood Advisory means minor flooding is imminent or occurring.

Be advised:

Highway 11 in Ka`u between Punalu`u and Na`alehu remains closed due to flooding across the roadway.
Na`alehu Elementary School Gymnasium is closed as a shelter.
Robert Herkes Gymnasium in Pahala will remain open through tonight as a shelter.

You will be informed should conditions change.

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for parts of Ka`u District.

A Flash Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring.

Due to the Flash Flood Warning and as a precaution, be advised:

Na`alehu Elementary School Gymnasium is open this evening as a shelter.

The Robert Herkes Gymnasium in Pahala is also open to motorists wanting to wait out the road closure in Pahala.
Highway 11 continues to remain closed between Punalu`u and Na`alehu due to flooding on the roadway.
There are no other road closures reported at this time.

You will be informed should conditions change.

This is a Civil Defense Road Closure message for Wednesday 09-09-2026 at 07:41 PM.

Hawaii Police Department reports that Highway 11 in Ka`u is closed in both directions near the 56 Mile Marker at Ninole Loop in Punalu`u and near the 63 Mile Marker at Na`alehu Police Station due to Flooding.

There are no detours available.

Please use alternate routes.

This is a Tropical Storm Lowell information update for Wednesday September 9th at 7:30am.
Over the past twenty-four hours, Lowell has weakened to a Tropical Storm and remains on a north northwest track and taking it away from the state.
As of 5:00 am this morning Lowell was located approximately 450 miles north northwest of Lihue and moving north northwest at 18 mph.
Although Lowel is moving away, remnant or trailing moisture continues to present with the possibility of heavy rains for parts of the state,
A flood watch remains in effect for Hawaii Island through this afternoon. Residents in flood prone areas are advised to take precautions.
The National Weather Service is currently monitoring two disturbances far off to the east of Hawaii and currently not posing any threat. The development of these systems reminds us that we are expected to have an active hurricane season with a higher-than-average number of tropical cyclones in the Central Pacific.
Please continue with your hurricane season preparedness and continue to monitor local radio broadcasts for official advisories in your area.
Conditions will be monitored closely and you will be kept informed of any developments.

The National Weather Service Flood Watch for Hawaii Island has been extended to Wednesday.

A Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flooding.

Residents in flood prone areas should be prepared for heavy rains and potential flooding, especially residents in Kau District.
Do not attempt to cross flowing water in a vehicle or on foot; turn around don’t drown.

West Hawaii beach parks and Honaunau Boat Ramp remain closed due to high surf impact.

The National Weather Service High Surf Warning for all south and west facing shores and High Surf Advisory for east facing shores of Hawaii Island remain in effect through today.

Due to the dangerous surf conditions and shoreline debris;

All State and County Beach Parks on west Hawaii, including Honaunau Boat Ramp, are closed today.
Beach-goers, swimmers, and surfers should heed all advise given by Ocean Safety Officials and exercise caution.

This is a Hurricane Lowell Information Update for Tuesday September 8th at 6:00am.
As of 5:00 this morning, Hurricane Lowell is producing sustained winds of up to 110 mph.
Lowell is currently located approximately 145 miles northwest of Lihue and 245 miles northwest of Honolulu and moving north at 18 mph.
Although Lowell remains far to the northwest of Hawaii Island, the forecast continues to call for high surf and possibly heavy rains and flooding conditions.
A Flood Watch remains in effect for Hawaii Island through this afternoon. Parts of Hawaii Island may see rainfall amounts from 4 to 8 inches with locally higher amounts up to 12 inches. Residents in flood prone areas are advised to take precautions and in particular those areas of the Kau district that were severely impacted by Hurricane Lala.
A high surf warning remains in effect for the south and west facing shores of Hawaii Island and a high surf advisory remains in effect for the east facing shores of Hawaii Island.
At this time all state and county government operations on Hawaii Island and all schools on Hawaii Island are open today.
Conditions will be monitored closely and you will be kept informed of any developments.
