The 37th Annual Richardson’s Roughwater Swim presented by the Hawai’i County Parks & Recreation Aquatics Section was a success on Saturday with swimmers competing in favorable weather and swell conditions in the 1-mile open ocean course!

Winners in eight categories were presented with a medal, certificate, and prizes to include a drawstring pack and Speedo goggles. All registered participants received a commemorative towel.

Fastest overall swimmer was Noelani Clark with a time of 26:01.472. The fastest kane, and the second fastest overall, was Kamakawiwo‘ole Vincent with a time of 26:20.949.

Congrats to all winners and mahalo to everyone who participated!

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisory for South Kona and Ka`u Districts through this evening.

A Flood Advisory means minor flooding is imminent or occurring.

Due to the Flood Advisory, be advised:

Flooding can be life-threatening. Residents in flood prone areas are asked to remain alert for flooding conditions.
Please drive with caution. Be on the alert for run-off, ponding of water, debris, and poor visibility.

Do not attempt to cross flowing water in a vehicle or on foot; turn around, don’t drown.

You will be informed should conditions change.

This is your Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency.

Kukuiola Moves Closer to Opening as County Seeks Facility Operator

The County of Hawaiʻi is seeking an experienced organization to manage and operate the Kukuiola Emergency Shelter and Assessment Center in Kailua-Kona.

The selected operator will oversee the emergency shelter, overnight safe parking, supportive services, and one-stop resource and assessment center—helping connect people experiencing or at risk of homelessness with resources, housing services and pathways toward greater stability.

The first phase of the Kukuiola campus will include 16 emergency shelter units, showers and restrooms, a shared kitchen, case management space and areas for community activities. The shelter will operate 24/7.

Organizations interested in operating the facility must have at least five years of relevant experience.

📅 Proposals are due by 4 p.m. October 20, 2026.
