Infantile spasms (IS) are rare, but very serious type of seizures. It is caused by a condition in a baby’s brain and includes repetitive but often sudden movements such as: sudden jerking of the mid-section, dropping of the head, raising of the arms, or wide-eyed blinks. IS can be misdiagnosed as colic, reflux, or a startle reflex. Worldwide it is estimated that a baby is diagnosed with IS every 12 minutes.

December 1-7 is Infantile Awareness Week to raise awareness of this medical emergency and together, IS can be more quickly diagnosed.

People living with epilepsy face higher frequency of depression and other mood disorders, social isolation, challenges in school and with living independently, higher unemployment, limitations on driving, and higher risk of early death. In addition, adults and children with seizures are more likely to live in poverty, and more likely to be insured under Medicaid.

The public can help the millions of people living with epilepsy by learning basic seizure first aid. People with seizures and their health care providers are encouraged to explore all options to achieve the best possible seizure control.

Seizure First Aid starts with using your brain. First aid for seizures is what you can do to keep a person safe until the seizure stops by itself. STAY with the person until the seizure ends. Keep the person SAFE and time the seizure. Turn the person on their SIDE if they start convulsing or are not awake. We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of long time EFH board member, Paul Campagne. Originally, from Erie, Pennsylvania, Paul dedicated a large part of his life to connect with and advocate for people, like him, who lived with epilepsy. He was a self-employed business man; owning and managing multiple properties here in Hawaii. Through his tenure on the EFH Board of Directors, Paul served in various capacities as board president, vice-president, and general board member. His dedication and leadership founded and sustained many of our current programs and events like the Freedom Run from Epilepsy held each July 4th in Kailua and epilepsy awareness initiatives implemented throughout the year.

Paul was a humble man that lived his life as a champion for our epilepsy community. It's because of stories like his and people like him that we need to move the needle for more epilepsy and SUDEP education, resources, treatment options, and research. Paul truly embodied EFH’s mission to lead the fight to overcome the challenges of living with epilepsy, and to accelerate therapies to stop seizures, find cures, and save lives.

~ Rest in love & light, Paul and loved ones we lost too soon to epilepsy. You will be affectionately remembered for your signature smile, encouraging words, like “Go get um, you can, I did”, and positive spirit despite having intractable epilepsy. ~

Join us, along with Paul's sister, Lisa (flying in from Erie, PA) on Sunday morning, November 17, 2019 from 9 :00 to 10:00 am at Waimanalo Beach – Beach Access 100 B – Hihimanu St. as we remember Paul, share stories, condolences, and memories.

Paul’s full obituary can be read below: https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/erietimesnews/obituary.aspx?n=paul-campagne&pid=194320522&fhid=8582

Epilepsy and seizures can develop in any person at any age. Seizures and epilepsy are more common in young children and older people. 1 in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. People with certain conditions may be at greater risk. At least 14,000 people in Hawaii live with active seizures, including 2,000 children. Approximately 3.4 million in the U.S. live with epilepsy, including 470,000 children. Epilepsy is the 4th most common neurological condition and affects more than 65 million people worldwide.

11/07/2019

Diagnosing seizures and the type of epilepsy is like putting the pieces of a puzzle together and includes information from many people and different tests. Knowing if a person is having a seizure and diagnosing the type of seizure or epilepsy syndrome can be difficult. There are many other disorders that can cause changes in behavior and can be confused with epilepsy. Since the treatment of seizures depends on an accurate diagnosis, making sure that a person has epilepsy, and knowing what kind is a critical first step.

What happens during a seizure is one of the most important pieces of information. And, since seizures rarely happen in a doctor's office, the information given to the doctor and other health care professionals by you or other witnesses is extremely important.

11/07/2019

Causes of epilepsy vary by age of the person. Some people with no clear cause of epilepsy may have a genetic cause. But what's true for every age is that the cause is unknown for about half of everyone with epilepsy.

Some people with no known cause of epilepsy may have a genetic form of epilepsy. One or more genes may cause the epilepsy or epilepsy may be caused by the way some genes work in the brain. The relationship between genes and seizures can be very complex and genetic testing is not available yet for many forms of epilepsy.
About 3 out of 10 people have a change in the structure of their brains that causes the electrical storms of seizures.
Some young children may be born with a structural change in an area of the brain that gives rise to seizures.

Read below about how and why a young Hawaii epilepsy advocate is spreading awareness of epilepsy in her community! Awesome job, Ella!! #EpilepsyHawaii #Epilepsy808 #IAlohaSomeoneLivingWithEpilepsy

Did you know that November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month? Our members had the honor of hearing from a young advocate, Ella K. of 'Iolani School, whose sister was diagnosed with epilepsy. She and her family have joined her sister in participating in national and local epilepsy advocacy and awareness efforts. Ella's sister recently attended the Teens Speak Up! conference in Washington D.C. to meet up with other teens who are also diagnosed with epilepsy. Ella has joined her sister's advocacy efforts by spreading awareness through her presentations. As our first guest speaker of the Kiwanis year, she helped our members understand the range of epileptic symptoms and the types of signs to look for. Mahalo to Ella, sister Sela, and their mother Karin for sharing something so close to home with us. Your bravery and perseverance is truly inspiring! #NEAM2019
