What started as a $1,000 gift in 1978 has grown into nearly five decades of hands-on learning for Shidler students.

That year, Henry Clark, an executive at Castle & Cooke, donated $1,000 to the Financial Management Association, Shidler’s finance club, to give students real-world experience in equity investing.

Today, his legacy continues to make an impact. This January, FMA’s student-managed stock portfolio reached an impressive milestone with a one-year return of 47%, far outpacing the S&P 500 and many professional investors.

Thanks to Clark’s foresight, generations of Shidler students have gained valuable investing experience and developed strong financial skills. To further expand on that vision, FMA awarded merit-based scholarships in 2025 to help students launch their own investment portfolios. The scholarships were donated by Benjamin Bystrom, FMA’s faculty advisor.

Congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients: Mason Pritts, Zion Ah You, Ayla Alameida, Kaui Keaunui, Cameron Bodner and Olivia Zaruba.

We are grateful for Henry Clark’s lasting legacy and Benjamin Bystrom’s continued support in creating opportunities that help shape future finance leaders.

Congratulations to Erick Huang, BBA ’25, on passing the CPA exam!

A recent Shidler College of Business graduate, Erick credits Shidler with helping him grow both professionally and personally through student organizations, networking events and the friendships he built along the way.

“Shidler is a great school to develop professionally and personally,” he shared. “I made lifelong friends through Shidler clubs and student organizations and expanded my network through the networking events Shidler and its student organizations provide.”

His advice to current students is to take advantage of every opportunity: attend networking events, get involved in student organizations and enjoy the college experience.

Congratulations again, Erick. We are proud to celebrate this exciting milestone with you!

Congratulations to Chia Yun “Mercy” Cheng, BBA ’26, who graduated this past Saturday from the Shidler College of Business with a degree in marketing.

Originally from Taiwan, Mercy’s journey at UH Mānoa has been one of growth, confidence and leadership. Through her involvement as a New Rainbow Warrior peer leader and with the Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship, where she served as a PACE Leader and student director for the Entrepreneurship Live program, Mercy found community while helping others do the same.

As she begins her next chapter, Mercy plans to remain in Hawaiʻi and pursue a career in marketing.

We are proud to celebrate Mercy and the many ways she represents the spirit of Shidler: curious, driven and ready to lead.

After more than two decades of transformative leadership, Dean Vance Roley is preparing to begin a new chapter—returning to the classroom at the Shidler College of Business.

Since 2005, Roley has guided the college through a period of significant growth, strengthening its global reputation, expanding partnerships and elevating opportunities for students, faculty and alumni.

From Tokyo to Hong Kong, the Shidler College of Business was proud to reconnect with alumni, students and friends across Asia during two special Alumni & Friends mixers this spring.

In Tokyo, more than 80 alumni, friends and study abroad students gathered for an especially meaningful evening as Dean Vance Roley made his final visit to Japan as dean following more than two decades of leadership at Shidler. The evening highlighted the strength of our global alumni network and the meaningful connections formed between alumni and current students studying abroad. Mahalo to Daniel Chun, BS ’02, from Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines for sharing his insights and journey with our guests.

The College then continued on to Hong Kong, where alumni and friends gathered for another memorable evening of reconnection and celebration. While more intimate in size, the pride, energy and shared Shidler spirit were just as strong.

These gatherings served as a powerful reminder that the Shidler connection extends far beyond Hawai‘i — bringing our community together across industries, generations and continents. Mahalo to everyone who joined us and continues to support our students, programs and global network. We are especially grateful to the alumni and Shidler team members who helped make this trip possible.

We look forward to returning in 2027 — stay tuned for future dates and events!
