New Homes for the Near Northside | Housing and Community Development Department

Meeting Tonight June 17th
5:30 pm -6:30 pm

Wesley Community Center
1410 Lee Street
Houston, Texas 77009

Or virtual (Microsoft Teams)

The City of Houston Housing & Community Development and the Houston Land Bank have recently acquired two new sites, which will be the location of the development of communities of single-family homes. The “north site,” on three blocks at 3201 Hardy and 1406 Hays roads, currently is the site of Yellow Cab Company. The “south site” sits adjacent to the Burnett Transit Center. In total, these two sites represent 16.8 acres of land that can be transformed to enrich the Near Northside, through the creation of homes and community spaces.

If you live or work in the Near Northside, we invite you to participate in a community engagement process to help decide the vision for these two new additions to the community. Participate on your computer or phone using our virtual tools on the Social Pinpoint, or join us for an open house in the community to discuss these new developments. Share your input by June 25, 2021, to have your input included in our wrap-up meeting. Learn more about the options at our project website!

Thank You, Eagle Scouts!

If you drive by Wesley’s Food Pantry at 1235 Lorraine Street, you will see it has changed quite a bit over the last year. Wesley Community Center has been honored to be the beneficiary of projects performed by some amazing young people. Four Boy Scouts from Troop 20 completed their Eagle Scout journey with a project for Wesley’s Food Pantry and Garden. These hard-working Boy Scouts built an outdoor shade structure for volunteer breaks, created a water reclamation system for our community garden, built a compost system, and installed new colorful garden beds. These projects have greatly improved the function and the appearance of our community garden and, ultimately, the food pantry where most of the produce from our garden goes when it is harvested!

“The Troop is happy that our Scouts have had the opportunity to do several fun and impactful projects for the garden. Many thanks to David Edwards for his work with Eagle Scouts Jonah, Jack, Jacob, and Aidan. We hope that future Eagle candidates will continue to contribute.” Scoutmaster for Troop 20, Todd Guerra

Bonnie Albrecht, Director of Children and Youth Programs at Wesley, has taken on many roles since the pandemic caused us to shut our doors in March of last year. For many months we were not able have children in the building, and Bonnie stepped up to help our team with rent assistance requests and our seniors’ food delivery. She helped train and supervise a group of teachers to help quickly distribute rent and financial assistance during June and July. Beginning in August, the Early Childhood team began meeting with kids and families virtually. It sounds strange but parents and little ones loved seeing their teacher on screen and learning new activities they could do at home together. Bonnie led the way to put precautions in place so we could safely welcome children back to Wesley in September while still creating a loving, learning environment. Bonnie says,

“I love working at Wesley because it is a one stop shop for families in need. We help clients holistically and we can help anyone at any age. Also, I love that we are able to pivot to whatever the needs of the community are during an emergency if it’s a hurricane, pandemic, or winter storm.”
