Today’s Aprendamos Español word is sobremesa (soh-breh-MEH-sah).

Sobremesa is that moment after a meal when the food is finished, but the conversation keeps going.

Instead of getting up right away, you stay a little longer to talk, laugh, share stories and simply enjoy being together. Sobremesa is about making time for one another and enjoying each other’s company.

What conversations make you want to stay just a little longer?

Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, we’ll be exploring Spanish words and expressions that don’t always have a simple one-word translation in English.
-------

Giants give back 🌿 This past Saturday, GCM NHS members spent their morning making a big impact at the Baytown Nature Center!

Tackling the entire peninsula, our National Honor Society volunteers picked up litter, restored the trails, and grabbed paintbrushes to refresh a section of safety railing, leaving the nature center cleaner, safer, and even more beautiful for the whole Baytown community to enjoy. 🖌️♻️

Because being a Giant means more than school spirit, it means showing up for the community that shapes us. So proud of our NHS members for choosing service on their Saturday. 💚🌎

In this special episode of Conversaciones Gigantes, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and this year’s theme, Raíces y Sueños | Roots and Dreams, through a conversation with Dan “BeBe” Garcia, a former student of what was then known as Baytown Mexican School, now De Zavala Elementary, and a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School.

Mr. Garcia shares memories of his childhood and youth in Baytown and takes us through different chapters of his life as a student at De Zavala, Baytown Junior, and Robert E. Lee High School. He briefly reflects on the Baytown Hawks, an important part of his personal story, and shares the fun story behind the nickname that has stayed with him for so many years: “BeBe.”

We also give a special shoutout to his book, While Daring Greatly, where he has preserved many of these stories.

The conversation flows between Spanish and English and connects the Baytown of yesterday with the students and families of today.

Our Giant Staff Member of the Month for September 2026 is Johnny T. Clark, Jr. Elementary Nurse Kristen Verbick, a compassionate caregiver. 🎉

Nurse Verbick is widely recognized for her ability to step up in moments of crisis and in daily school life. Last year, when a severe car wreck occurred directly in front of the school, she immediately rushed out to provide emergency care to those involved, including a four-year-old girl. After the child’s family later visited the campus to express their gratitude with flowers, life came full circle this school year. That same little girl is now a student on campus, and despite lingering effects from the accident, she was overjoyed to discover that her real-life "guardian angel" is her very own school nurse.

Our Giant Student of the Month for September 2026 is Prince Rodriguez Washington, a fourth grader at Antonio Bañuelos Elementary. 🎉

Prince’s genuine care for others was recently demonstrated during a campus medical emergency involving a fellow student. Recognizing immediately that help was needed, he sprang into action and ran to alert the school nurse, allowing for rapid care. Beyond his quick thinking in critical moments, Prince consistently steps up in everyday situations. He has taken on the daily responsibility of helping a classmate navigate dismissal safely, showing the dependability and selflessness that define his character.

Today’s Aprendamos Español expression is echarle ganas.

Echarle ganas is an expression used to encourage someone to give their best effort, keep going or face something with determination. Depending on the moment, “¡Échale ganas!” can mean you’ve got this, keep going, or give it your best.

No single English expression captures every way it can be used. At its heart, echarle ganas is about putting effort and determination into what you're doing, especially when something isn't easy.

What are you echándole ganas to right now?

Throughout Hispanic Heritage Month, we'll explore Spanish words and expressions that don't always fit neatly into a one-word English translation.

-----------------

Every day in the classroom matters.

In this episode of The Goose Call, we’re talking about the important role regular attendance plays in student learning and academic success. Kendall David, Chief of Community Engagement; Mayra Buenrostro, Truancy Specialist; and Larissa Richards, Goose Creek CISD Elementary District Teacher of the Year, join us to discuss the impact of missed school, what district data tells us about attendance and student performance, and what families should know about chronic absenteeism and truancy.

We also look at why attendance is especially important for high school students under the new 5x5 schedule and how families can work with their child’s school when attendance becomes a concern.
