I joined Hello Houston last week with hosts Ernie Manouse and Michael Adkison, and human trafficking expert and founder of Hope Pyx Global, Eileen D**g, to help raise awareness ahead of the United Nations’ World Day Against Human Trafficking. With Houston ranked second in the nation for reported cases, and HPD recovering 86 trafficking victims in January alone, this is a critical issue in our community.

The groundbreaking on the new Edgewood Community Center was a happy occasion in South Park in District D recently. Community leaders, including Cynthia Pharms, have been pushing for the upgrades for quite some time. I was happy to join Mayor John Whitmire and Councilmember Carolyn Evans-Shabazz and Council Member Willie Davis to mark the occasion. Kudos to Houston Parks - HPARD Director Kenneth Allen and his staff for their hard work on the new 2,000 square-foot facility, which will feature a new indoor gym and multipurpose rooms to serve youth and seniors.

This past weekend, I joined many other Houstonians, including Mayor John Whitmire , in assisting with the annual Bread Of Life, Inc Back to School Health Fair and Food Distribution in Downtown. Together, we loaded cars with school supplies, food, and household items to help families with their school supply and everyday needs. Led by founder and Executive Director, Pastor Rudy Rasmus., Bread of Life serves Houston’s underserved in communities. The event also provided families with free health screenings, school physicals, clothing, and haircuts. It’s always a meaningful experience to see the community come together to help others.

Yesterday, I helped send off the HPD Bike Relay team on their cross-country journey to Niagara Falls, New York. The ride benefits Blood Cancer United (formerly the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society). The team of 27 riders will relay day and night, arriving at their destination Saturday at 3:00 p.m. This year they have raised over $92,000 for Blood Cancer United, whose mission is to fund life-saving blood cancer research, support patients and their families, educate the public, and advocate for access to care. This is their 45th year to go above and beyond their daily service to the city to support a worthwhile charity. Each rider will also wear dog tags emblazoned with the names of loved ones who’ve inspired their journey. Ride safely, team!

I was honored to attend the Gregory School’s 100th Anniversary last weekend -- a truly remarkable milestone. Located in historic Freedmen’s Town, in Houston’s Fourth Ward, the building is now the site of the Houston Public Library’s African American History Research Center, one of the city’s four research centers. I saw contained within the Center some of the rich history of Houston’s African American community. It was a powerful reminder of the contributions of so many people that have helped shape our community. I’m grateful that the city is preserving this material to ensure that future generations can learn from and appreciate this history.

Last weekend, I attended the ribbon cutting for Ox St. Kitchen, a commercial kitchen spearheaded by The Magnolia Fund. The Magnolia Fund is a community investment fund built to reinvest capital in the East End. Ox St. Kitchen supports emerging local entrepreneurs by providing them with low-cost access to professional‑grade equipment and shared space where their businesses can build, grow, and stay connected to their community. In a heart-felt tribute, the space is named in honor of Marcello ‘Ox’ Garcia III, a Houston firefighter who grew up in the East End, served in his neighborhood, and died tragically in the line of duty. Although the Magnolia Fund is closed, founders Erick Ibarra and Ariel Trevino have provided a model for investment in emerging businesses in our own neighborhoods.

Today I joined members of the Houston Police Department, Mayor John Whitmire , and some of my council colleagues at the groundbreaking of the new South Central Patrol Station. Located deep in the East End near the intersection of S. Lockwood and Telephone Rd., the new facility represents a significant investment in public safety. It will be larger and more accessible to residents than the current outdated facility and will include meeting space for community groups. Yesterday, I chaired the Houston City Council Quality of Life monthly meeting where we heard about homelessness items that will appear on the regular council agenda soon. We also heard an update on the 419 Emancipation facility, which has reached capacity in less than six weeks. It currently houses 222 previously homeless individuals.

The mission of the facility is to help individuals with severe needs receive appropriate services and care. Homeless individuals receive safe temporary housing, trauma-informed therapy, clothing, physical healthcare, healthy meals, substance-use services, and other resources focused on helping them find and stay in permanent housing. manages the facility. Everybody loves a Fourth of July parade! Many thanks to the Kingwood Civic Club and the Kingwood Rotary Club for putting on another great parade. Once again, I was pleased to join more than 1,000 people who lined the streets to celebrate our nation's 250th birthday.
