Today, Chief Stephen Carlisle and officers of the Roman Forest Police stood shoulder to shoulder with the sea of blue from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and agencies across our region, honoring the life and service of Deputy Erika Serrato, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on June 28, 2026.

Deputy Serrato was one of our own here in East Montgomery County. A Porter High School graduate, she began her public safety journey as a firefighter with East Montgomery County Fire before proudly serving the citizens of Montgomery County as a Deputy Sheriff. In every role, Erika embodied courage, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. Her dedication to public service reflected the very best of our profession.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with Deputy Serrato’s family, her friends, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and all who were touched by her kindness and strength. Her bravery, her heart for service, and her sacrifice will forever be remembered. Her legacy will continue to inspire us.

Sergio Soto, 21, of New Caney, was arrested for Theft of Property.

Officer Rawlinson was alerted by a resident who reported that his wallet had been stolen from Appian Deli. Utilizing a vehicle description obtained from the store’s surveillance cameras, Officer Rawlinson was able to locate the vehicle on Flock. This led to the identification of the suspect’s address in the Kings Colony subdivision in New Caney. Soto informed the officer that he intended to return the wallet, however, it was missing several hundred dollars in cash, credit cards, and photographs. The wallet also contained Soto’s personal belongings, which further indicated that he was not intending to return it.

MCSO Deputy Erika Serrato was killed in Line of Duty on Interstate 45.

On June 28, 2026, at approximately 2:39 a.m., deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 45 North near the Woodlands Parkway exit. Deputies arrived on scene and began assisting with this DWI crash investigation, including directing traffic to ensure the safety of those involved.

While deputies were actively working the scene, a heavy-duty commercial truck pulling a trailer struck Deputy Erika Serrato who was outside her vehicle directing traffic, along with two marked patrol vehicles that had emergency lights activated.

Deputy Serrato, 24 years old was transported to a local hospital where she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased. She was serving the community with dedication and courage at the time of her death. She has been employed with MCSO for 6 years.

An additional MCSO Deputy was also injured during the incident after being struck by debris. He sustained minor injuries, was treated at a local hospital and was released.

One of the drivers involved in the initial crash, identified as Ashton Jammer, a 34-year-old male, has been charged with Driving While Intoxicated and will be transported to the Montgomery County Jail.

The driver of the commercial vehicle that struck Deputy Serrato was transported to a local hospital, and this crash remains under investigation.

Roadway is back open

Roman Forest Blvd is closed to westbound traffic due to a fallen tree obstructing the roadway. Crews are presently on scene working to clear the debris. Traffic is currently being rerouted via Winding Summit.
