The Independence Fire Department was established in 1843 making it one of the oldest fire departments west of the Mississippi River. Rich in history and tradition, we pride ourselves on being an organization true to its roots, while maintaining the flexibility to embrace change. Consisting of 10 fire stations, 15 apparatus, and a staff of 190 dedicated personnel, IFD provides high quality fire protection, fire prevention and emergency services to the citizens and visitors of our city, all day, every day. Before we roll out for a service call, a lot happens behind the scenes.

This week, we welcomed Citizens Academy participants to Fire Station 1 to learn more about how IFD works, trains, and serves.

They toured our equipment and apparatus, learned about day-to-day operations, regional partnerships, fire prevention, training and what it takes to join our team.

And of course, we weren't going to send them home without going up in the bucket.

Citizens Academy lets us pull back the curtain, connect directly with our residents, and show why we're so proud of the work we do.

We appreciated the chance to share more about what we do and why we do it.

A new pumper is officially in service for Station 3.

Today, crews welcomed Pumper 3 with a traditional push-in ceremony.

The tradition dates back more than 200 years, when firefighters had to manually push their equipment back into the station after returning from a call. Today, firefighters and community members carry on that tradition by pushing a new engine into its bay.

Pumper 3 replaces an aging fire engine and represents an $860,000 investment in our Fire Department, funded through the voter-approved Fire Protection Sales Tax.

From new equipment to new fire stations, your sales tax dollars help provide the resources we need to support our firefighters as they respond to thousands of calls for service across Independence each year. Thank you.

This week reminded us why battery safety matters.

The first photo shows damage from a battery fire IFD responded to earlier this week.

That risk is why the Independence Fire Department joined the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to promote this year's Fire Prevention Week™.

We love visiting local elementary and preschools to connect with kids and teach them about fire safety.

This year's Fire Prevention Week theme, "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower," is important for kids too. More toys, screens, and everyday devices run on lithium-ion batteries.

We joined Mayor Kevin King tonight to make it official: Oct. 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week.

This year's National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)'s theme is "Charge into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower." It focuses on something most of us use every day: lithium-ion batteries.

Phones. Laptops. Tools. Toys. So many things around our homes rely on rechargeable batteries, so it's important to charge them safely.

Throughout the week, IFD will be sharing simple steps and reminders to charge smarter and prevent battery fires.
