AXE HANDLE SATURDAY SEALS PLACE IN HISTORY WITH CIVIL RIGHTS TRAIL MARKER - SAVE THE DATE *** Jacksonville's Civil Rights history will be permanently remembered with the Civil Rights Trail Marker Dedication on Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the corner of Duval and Hogan streets, in front of City Hall at James Weldon Johnson Park. The marker commemorates the courage of the young men and women who stood for justice during the city's Civil Rights Movement and ensures their sacrifices will be preserved for future generations.
Axe Handle Saturday is one of the darkest days in Jacksonville's history. On Aug. 27, 1960, a group of Black high school and college students staged peaceful sit-ins at the segregated Woolworths lunch counters to protest racial discrimination. As the demonstrations ended, a white mob armed with axe handles, baseball bats and clubs attacked the students in broad daylight. The violence unfolded in the heart of downtown while law enforcement initially failed to intervene, drawing national attention to Jacksonville and becoming a defining moment in the city's Civil Rights Movement.
The new Civil Rights Trail marker will stand as a lasting reminder of the bravery, resilience and determination of those young activists whose peaceful protests helped pave the way for greater equality.
