BREAKING: Federal Judge's Words Fuel Fresh Impeachment Calls After White House Extortion Plot Exposed
A federal judge just handed impeachment advocates their strongest evidence yet, and it came straight from the bench.
Newly disclosed emails show that after Trump publicly threatened "harsh measures" against Colorado unless the state released Tina Peters, a convicted election denier, early from prison, the White House convened an urgent call across five federal agencies to explore cutting off support to the state. The very next day, the Departments of Transportation and Energy canceled hundreds of millions of dollars in Colorado grants.
U.S. District Court Judge R. Brooke Jackson reacted with open alarm when the email surfaced in court Tuesday. "I've never seen anything like it," he said. "The very idea that the president would target a state because they don't feel that the state and its administrators are in line with the current administration's priorities is phenomenal."
That is not commentary from a pundit or a political rival. That is a sitting federal judge, on the record, describing what looks like the executive branch weaponized against an American state for refusing to comply.
MS NOW's Steve Benen put it plainly: this was effectively an extortion plot hatched by the White House against a state government, and the fact that it worked, Colorado's governor commuted Peters' sentence in May, doesn't make it defensible. It makes it worse. "Impeachment efforts have been launched over less," Benen wrote.
He's right. Abuse of federal power to coerce a state into submission is precisely the kind of conduct impeachment exists for. A judge already called it phenomenal from the bench. Congress doesn't need to wait for a clearer signal than that.
