It was wonderful to welcome community members into the library to explore our resources and services, sign up for library cards, enjoy henna, play Bingo, and learn more about all that the library has to offer. ✨📖🪬🍦

A special thank you to Jerome Choice for sharing The Story of Lafayette and bringing the rich history of the Lafayette Branch to life. His presentation highlighted the branch’s lasting impact on the community and its continued role as a neighborhood gathering place.🗣️

A special thank you to Teen Board members Xiaolu You and Nithyapriya Subraiuanian for their compassion, initiative, and dedication to serving our community. 🫶🏽

Through their efforts, materials were collected and donated for more than 30 period kits for the Pavonia Branch. The kits were assembled by the McNair Academic High School Red Cross Club, whose members helped bring this project to life. Each kit also included a handwritten note filled with encouragement and positivity, adding a personal touch for those who receive them.💛💙

We are grateful to Xiaolu and Nithyapriya for spearheading this initiative and to the McNair Red Cross Club for their support in assembling the kits. Their kindness, teamwork, and commitment to helping others are truly inspiring and demonstrate the power of youth leadership in action.✨

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the second installment of JCFPL Presents: The Curious Pint at the Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium in the Liberty Science Center. 🎶 📚🪐

We were honored to spend the evening with Dr. Melanie R. Hill as she shared insights from her book, Colored Women Sittin’ on High: Womanist Sermonic Practice in Literature and Music, and captivated us with a beautiful live violin performance. Through literature, music, and conversation, attendees explored the powerful legacies of Black women writers, musicians, preachers, activists, and cultural visionaries. 🎻 📖✨

Thank you to everyone who came out, engaged in thoughtful discussion, connected with neighbors, and helped make the evening such a memorable celebration of learning and community. Special thanks to our partners at Liberty Science Center for hosting us in such a unique and inspiring space.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at the Miller Branch Library for an inspiring evening celebrating the release of author and photographer Kurt Boone’s latest photobook, George Floyd Square. 📚📸

We were honored to welcome Boone alongside activist, community leader, and George Floyd’s brother, Terrence Floyd, for a powerful conversation about memory, healing, social justice, and the ongoing impact of community activism. The discussion, thoughtfully moderated by arts and culture writer Jamara Wakefield, founder of IntheWakeMedia.tv, encouraged meaningful dialogue and reflection among attendees. 🗣️📣

Programs like these reflect the library’s commitment to being a welcoming space where people can come together to learn, share perspectives, engage with important issues, and connect through stories that matter. Congratulations to 18-month-old Pranshul Prajapati, our first young patron from the Marion Branch Library to complete the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, well before starting kindergarten! 📚👏

We invite all families to participate in this free program, which encourages parents and caregivers to read 1,000 books with their child before they begin kindergarten.

How it works:

Read any book with your little one and track your progress. The goal is simple: read 1,000 books before kindergarten. If you read just one book each night, you’ll reach:

📖 365 books in one year
📖 730 books in two years
📖 1,095 books in three years

Reading together has lifelong benefits:

• Children who are read to at least three times a week develop stronger early literacy and phonemic awareness skills.
• Reading supports social-emotional growth, character development, and can help reduce aggression, hyperactivity, and attention difficulties.
• Shared reading helps children learn to identify and express their emotions in healthy ways.

The key is perseverance, make reading fun and part of your daily routine! To celebrate your child’s progress, the library awards a prize for every 100 books read. 🎖️
