Since 1969, located in Crandon Park, Key Biscayne, FL, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center has been reaching thousands of children and adults each year with environmental education programs. Overlooking the dunes and ocean, the Biscayne Nature Center is a beautiful facility on the north end of Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. In this pristine setting, our multifunctional Center serves

our visitors with a reception area, exhibit space, gift shop, an audio visual presentation room and demonstration lab classroom facilities. And right outside our doors, we are fortunate to have Mother Nature's spectacular classroom, which we proudly care for and share with our visitors. is a not-for-profit Florida corporation whose interest is in the conservation of our local irreplaceable natural resources.

🐬 Wildlife Wednesday Feature 🐬

Meet the bottlenose dolphin!

Bottlenose dolphins are highly social and intelligent marine mammals found in coastal waters throughout Florida. They communicate using clicks, whistles, and body movements—and each dolphin develops its own unique signature whistle, almost like a name!

As important members of our coastal ecosystems, dolphins are a reminder of why protecting clean, healthy oceans matters for all the wildlife that calls them home. 🌊

If you’re lucky enough to spot dolphins in the wild, enjoy them from a respectful distance and let them stay wild. 💙

Meet the Caribbean Vase Shell!

The Caribbean vase shell is a striking marine snail found throughout the tropical western Atlantic, including the waters around South Florida. Its thick, spiny shell helps protect it from predators, while the snail inside is an active hunter that feeds on other marine invertebrates.

These beautiful shells are an important part of our coastal ecosystems, reminding us that every creature—big or small—has a role to play in keeping Biscayne Bay healthy.

Plastic Free July starts today.

Our wildlife can’t choose a plastic-free world—but we can.

This month, challenge yourself to reduce (or eliminate!) single-use plastics. Bring a reusable water bottle, skip the plastic bag, pack your lunch in reusable containers, or say no to plastic straws. Small changes made by many people can have a big impact.

Every piece of plastic we keep out of our waterways helps protect the sea turtles, seabirds, fish, and other wildlife that call our coast home.

The banded tulip (Fasciolaria lilium) is proof that there’s more to a seashell than meets the eye. This native Florida sea snail has an incredible sense of chemoreception, allowing it to detect chemical signals in the water, and feeds using a specialized structure called a radula—a ribbon-like organ lined with thousands of microscopic teeth.

Every species has its own unique adaptations, and the banded tulip is a great reminder that some of the coolest wildlife discoveries are hiding in plain sight.
