On this day twenty-five years ago, there was a powerful example of the commitment to serving others on display. In New York City, Washington, DC and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania firefighters and other first responders rushed toward the burning World Trade Center Towers 1 and 2, The Pentagon, and a field in the middle of nowhere with the determination to save the lives of those affected by those terrible events. On that fateful day 2,977 people died. This includes 343 of our brother firefighters. Most of those killed were innocent people who had no control over being involved in these events, but those 343 firefighters put their lives in harm's way for their fellow man. Over the days, weeks and months that followed, thousands of other firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical workers from all over the world converged on New York City to dig through the rubble that was once the World Trade Center Towers. They did this to try and provide closure to the victims' families and to help their brother and sister firefighters recover from these senseless acts. Over 10,000 of these volunteers have died, and thousands of others face serious health consequences because of being exposed to hazardous chemicals in their willingness to help. Today we honor all who died, all who continue to suffer, and the ones who continue the commitment to serve their communities and fellow man in any capacity.
