Did you know replacing a utility pole isn’t as simple as taking one out and sliding another one in?

Crews must assess the situation, secure the scene, gather the necessary supplies and equipment, remove the broken pole, call 811 for locates, prepare and set the replacement, transfer the power lines and electrical equipment, and inspect everything before safely re-energizing the system.

Even under favorable conditions, replacing a damaged pole can take three to four hours or longer.

As students head back to school, take a few minutes to talk with your children about electrical safety at the bus stop and on the bus. Remind them not to climb or play near utility poles, guy wires or pad-mounted transformers, and to always stay away from fallen power lines.

It’s also important for children to know what to do if a bus accident involves a utility pole or downed power line. A quick conversation now can help them respond safely in an emergency.

On August 11 and every day, we remind homeowners and contractors to use 811 before they dig. This simple step protects you, your property and your entire community.

Striking a single utility line can cause repair costs, inconvenient outages, fines, severe injuries and can even cause fatalities. Every digging project warrants contacting 811 by phone or online. It’s free, it’s fast and it can prevent a life-changing mistake.

To learn more about safe digging and to submit a request, visit www.811beforeyoudig.com or call 811.
