Congratulations, Chief Hardy!

Majed Al-Ghafry has appointed Joe Hardy as Chief of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical, following his service as Acting Fire Chief since December 2024 and nearly three decades with the department.

“I believe in preserving our traditions, strengthening our culture and providing the highest level of service to the community we are privileged to protect. Our mission remains focused on protecting lives and serving our community with excellence,” said Hardy.

A lifelong Lawrence resident and second-generation firefighter, Hardy will continue to lead the department's commitment to professionalism, integrity, and excellence in emergency response and public safety services.

Join us as we welcome Engine 4 into service with a traditional fire service push-in ceremony!

Event Details

📅 Date: Friday, August 7
⏰ Time: 3:00–4:00 p.m.
➡️ Traditional push-in ceremony: Approximately 3:30 p.m.
📍 Location: Station 4 (2121 Wakarusa Dr., Lawrence, KS 66047)

This long-standing tradition dates back to the days of horse-drawn fire apparatus, when firefighters would wash and manually push their equipment back into the station. Today, it symbolizes the pride, teamwork, and commitment that continue to define the fire service.

Engine 4 is Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical’s second Pierce Volterra fire engine, supporting the City of Lawrence’s sustainability goals while helping reduce diesel emissions and providing a healthier work environment for our firefighters.

We look forward to celebrating this exciting addition to our fleet with our community! 🚒

Today, we pause to remember and honor our brother, Mark Blair.

On July 17th, 1986, Mark responded to a house fire with Engine Company 4. In his selfless dedication, he made the ultimate sacrifice while searching for trapped occupants.

Rest easy, brother. Your bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
