🚨 REMINDER 🚨

REMINDER: On Tuesday, November 17, 2026, around 2:20 p.m. ET, FEMA and the Federal Communications Commission will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS).

The test will air on radio and TV only and will not be sent to mobile phones. No action is needed from the public.

Federal law requires FEMA to conduct a nationwide EAS test at least once every three years. Routine tests help ensure the alert system is ready to provide timely information when it matters most.

Following the test, FEMA and our partners will review the results and identify opportunities to strengthen future alerting capabilities.

🚨 Training Today for a Safer Tomorrow!

Decatur County EMA Coordinator Jessica Bear and Deputy Coordinator Shaun Kloster have been attending the Medical Preparedness & Response to Bombing Incidents (MGT-348/PER-233) training this week.

This training strengthens our ability to respond to emergencies and better protect the residents of Decatur County.

🚨 Public safety is everyone’s responsibility! Stay alert, report suspicious activity, have an emergency plan, and stay informed. If you see something, say something!

Preparedness starts with all of us. Working together, we can build a safer Decatur County!

🔥 The only fire weather concerns in the next week, which are minimal, will be tomorrow/Wednesday when breezy winds from the south will be sustained at 10 to 20 mph with gusts of 25 to 30 mph along with warm conditions.
🌽 The mitigating factor here is that the minimum relative humidity values will generally be above 50% and thus will keep the cropland fire danger in the high category (3 out of a max of 5).
🌧️ Otherwise, there will be rain and storm chances accompanying a cold front later in the day into Wednesday night. Additional rain and storm chances will arrive late Thursday night into Friday and Saturday.

⛈️ -Showers and thunderstorms become spotty to scattered ahead of a cold front later Wednesday afternoon and night. A few severe storms capable of large hail and gusty winds are possible from mid to late afternoon into early evening.
☔️ 🎃 👻 -Widespread rain chances move back into Iowa later Thursday night into Friday and Saturday leading to mild and perhaps damp conditions for trick-or-treating. Rumbles of thunder also possible on Friday.
🌡️ -Temperatures remain seasonal if not above normal through the next week.

🚨 LEARNING TODAY, PREPARING FOR TOMORROW! 🚨

🚒🚓🌪️ Decatur County Emergency Management spent the past few days in Ankeny attending the Iowa Homeland Security Conference!

Emergency management is about more than responding when disaster strikes. It’s about planning ahead, building relationships, staying informed, and making sure we’re ready when our communities need us most.

Throughout the conference, we had the opportunity to learn about new strategies, exchange ideas, and connect with emergency management and public safety professionals from across Iowa.

💡 Why does this matter for Decatur County?

Because the knowledge we gain and the partnerships we build today can make a difference tomorrow when severe weather, emergencies, or disasters impact our communities.

We may be a small, rural county, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be BIG on preparedness! 💪

We’re heading home with fresh ideas, valuable resources, and an even stronger commitment to keeping Decatur County safe, prepared, and resilient.
