THIS DAY in FORT MILES HISTORY- April 29, 1943
(DECLASSIFIED)
BATTERY X
Bethany Beach, Delaware, WAAC range crew prepared their equipment while men had their 90 MM guns emplaced ready to fire on a forty foot long target sleeve towed in the air. At the controls of this B10 were WASP pilots of the 2nd Ferrying Command out of New Castle Army Air Base.
Once this red sleeve was in view, the WAAC crew chief called out, "On Target, FIRE!" and the 90 MM guns shredded the fabric sleeve so immaculately that it broke from its tether and floated into the ocean.
As they continued to track the sleeve, the battery continued to fire. The plane was unharmed and the training had been a success!

Although proven a successful experiment, Congress would not approve- America was not ready for women in combat roles. Shown here are some WAACs of BATTERY X and WASP pilots preparing for aerial gunnery training alongside of WASP co-founder Jackie Cochran.
