John Engel is honored to serve as Principal of Durham Middle School and brings nearly three decades of experience in public education. Throughout his career, he has led elementary, middle, and high schools, building a reputation for strong instructional leadership, high expectations, and a deep commitment to student success. Prior to joining Durham, he served as principal of Southwest High School in Fort Worth ISD, where he led academic improvement efforts, oversaw a major campus renovation, and expanded support services for students and families.
Mr. Engel earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Salisbury University and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Texas at Arlington. He believes deeply in the power of public education and the opportunities it unlocks for students. He believes that strong schools are the foundation of strong communities and that every child deserves to be known, challenged, supported, and inspired to reach their full potential.
Having grown up on a dairy farm, Mr. Engel felt right at home in Lewisville ISD, where the Lewisville High School Farmers mascot reflects values of hard work and pride. At Durham Middle School, he introduced the motto, “Excellence in Everything,” as a reflection of the school's commitment to high standards. He believes that students and staff should strive for excellence in all they do and that the Durham community deserves nothing less than the very best.
Mr. Engel and his wife, Cassandra, are the proud parents of four children and one grandson. He is grateful to be part of the Durham family and looks forward to partnering with students, staff, and families to continue building a culture of excellence, opportunity, and success for all.
