📢📢📢📢All Absentee Ballot Materials from the Ohio Secretary of State and the Auglaize County Board of Elections will have the above stamp on the envelop📢📢📢

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose announced today that Ohio’s registered voters will soon begin receiving an absentee ballot request form in the mail. Those request forms are arriving in mailboxes around Labor Day weekend.

“For over a decade, registered Ohio voters have received an absentee ballot request form ahead of the Presidential and Gubernatorial general elections, and that will continue this year,” said Secretary LaRose.

Since 2012, the state legislature has authorized the mailing of absentee ballot application forms to registered voters in every even-year general election.

📢Only after the completed application, including voter identification, is verified by bipartisan teams at a county board of elections is a ballot mailed to a voter.📢

The horror that ICE (Immigration Customs Enforcement) continues in our country is very close to home for Allen County with the death of young Pierre Damas Bel in Springfield. Pierre was an exemplary young man. He graduated with honors from high school, played varsity soccer and was a lieutenant in the Marine Junior ROTC. He also worked part time as he began
to attend Wright State University. He and his family were here legally under TPS (Temporary Protective Status), which was recently yanked away by the Trump Administration suit to the U.S. Supreme Court.

There was no illegal activity on Pierre's part, nor his family - no complaints, no arrest, no warrants. But he was required to wear an ankle monitor. His family reports that he was embarrassed
and humiliated by the ankle monitor. He felt people were afraid of him and the monitor interfered with his ability to play soccer. Twice he visited ICE offices and begged to have it removed. The
degradation of being forced to wear the monitor led him to a desperation so acute, that he took his own life. Before you drag out your worn-out justifications of “we must rid our country of these criminals” or “they should have obeyed law enforcement” STOP! He was doing as ordered and was obeying law enforcement!

Everything he had done in his life are things any American parent would be proud to have their child accomplish. The true toll of deaths under the jurisdiction of ICE is unknown as they operate under the most secretive and clandestine ways. They are ill-trained and not held to the practices and standards of standard law enforcement. Estimates are between 70-75% of those being detained by ICE have NO criminal history. Billions are being spent by our government to private contractors to build detention centers. Ohio’s Governor has spoken to the value and need in our state for immigrants.

Those who do not know history are condemned to repeat it. The greatest generation of Americans stopped the horror of demeaning, isolating and falsely accusing a group of innocent people who were slaughtered by the millions in WW2. It once was yellow stars and now it is black ankle monitors. It once was shackles that enslaved people who were considered less than human and our country fought a civil war to stop that
dehumanization.

One young man, who played by the rules and did everything right, could not bear the injustice rained upon him by our country. He was marked like a criminal, not for anything he had done wrong, but because the color of his skin has been used to falsely incriminate an entire group of immigrants. Those immigrants have been seeking what was once the best of our country - a shot at freedom, equal justice and the opportunity to realize We must hold ICE accountable to the vision of a just society, the foundation on which our country has stood.

“Born in 1934 in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem rose from working-class roots to be one of the leaders of the women's rights movement in the late 20th and 21st centuries.”

Civil rights activist and journalist Gloria Steinem died Wednesday at age 92, according to her official Instagram page.

Steinem "passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her," the post read. "Gloria’s near-century on earth were years well-lived, and she continued working for equality until the very end."

Born in 1934 in Toledo, Ohio, Steinem rose from working-class roots to be one of the leaders of the women's rights movement in the late 20th and 21st centuries.

She was one of the founders of "New York" and "Ms." magazines and author of numerous books, including "My Life on the Road" and "The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will P**s You Off!

Steinem also dedicated her life to the cause of equality and civil rights, co-founding the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Ms. Foundation for Women, the Free to Be Foundation, and the Women’s Media Center in the United States.

Sept. 2, 2026: Statement on the death of Pierre Damas Bel in Springfield, OH.

I’m saddened and angered by the loss of Pierre Damas Bel. Condolences alone don’t feel like enough to offer his family who lost a son, nephew and cousin. His classmates have lost a friend. His team lost a fellow player. His Springfield community lost a man who could have become a leader and elder for future generations.
The tragic loss of Mr. Bel, a student at Wright State University, should compel us to reflect on the human consequences of our nation’s immigration system. He and his family came to this country seeking opportunity, stability, and the chance to build a better future. Like generations of immigrants before him, he was pursuing the promise of life, liberty, and opportunity.
The unnecessary distress and cruelty forced on Mr. Bel reminds us that behind every immigration case is a human being…a person with family, friends, hopes, fears, and a future. We must consider the tremendous uncertainty faced by our neighbors who fear being separated from the lives and communities they have built. Many were given asylum on the grounds that their lives were at risk if they stayed in the land where they were born. That risk doesn’t abate on a timeline of convenience to politicians on a 4-year plan to meet campaign promises to a minority of Americans.

Here in Lima, we are fortunate to have a strong and vibrant Haitian community. Over 20+ years, Haitian neighbors have been our friends, coworkers, classmates, business owners, and church members. This isn’t a story of Lima just playing host to outside guests in need, but one where our community is enriched by the culture of Haitians who contribute to our city, build up our neighborhoods, work alongside us at factories, and share our pews. If immigration enforcement is and Ohio’s authorities are sincere about public safety, then those efforts should be executed with precision toward those who actually risk harm. They need to keep their hands and ankle monitors off of Lima’s families and neighbors. What we let happen to our neighbors will eventually come to us, and we can’t be cowards about protecting each other from big government.
