Light agenda at last night's Gladstone City Council meeting, but a very important one. Here's a recap:

🌐 New City Website
We kicked off the evening with a study session led by Nikki Lansford, Communications Specialist, who gave us a preview of the City's new website. It adds a lot of new functionality and is fully ADA compliant, so it will be easier for every resident to use. The new site should launch within the next month or two. I'm especially excited that it will feature photos from recent City events.

📱 New City App
The City is also building a new phone app. It should be ready shortly after the website launches, depending on the App Store and Google Play approval timelines.

👮 Welcome, Chief Yoder
Kirt Yoder took his Oath of Office and is now officially Gladstone's new Police Chief. Congratulations, Chief!

🌿 Storm Brush Drop-Off
Storm brush drop-off is still open to Gladstone residents through Thursday, November 5, at the Public Works Facility. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 4 pm.

🍂 Fall Brush Drop-Off: November 6 to 8
Gladstone residents can drop off brush and yard waste for free at the Public Works Facility from 8 am to 5 pm each day. Bring proof of residency. Trash and hazardous waste are not accepted.

🎃 Haunted Firehouse: This Saturday!
The Haunted Firehouse returns for its 3rd year on Saturday, October 31, from 5 to 7 pm at Fire Station #2. Families can enjoy trick-or-treating, games, and Halloween fun with our firefighters. It's free, and parking is available next door at the NKC Schools Early Education Center.

📬 Gladstone Magazine
The fall edition of the Gladstone Magazine should arrive in mailboxes in early November. It includes Freedom Fest highlights, updates on ongoing City projects, and much more.

💙 A Personal Note
Last night's meeting meant a lot to me. Monday would have been my mom's 69th birthday. For 30 years she worked for the State of Missouri as a psychiatric social worker, often side by side with our firefighters, EMS crews, and police officers. She was there for people on some of the hardest days of their lives, and she cared just as much about the first responders who carried that weight. She believed public safety is about caring for people, including the ones who answer the call. Swearing in our new police chief on her birthday felt right, and I know she'd be proud.

To every officer, firefighter, and paramedic in Gladstone: thank you, and take care of yourselves too.

What a great way to spend a Saturday morning! 🥞

I had a wonderful time at the Elks Lodge Pancake Breakfast, where neighbors came together to support Gladstone's Shop with a Cop program. Every plate served helps our officers spend time with local kids during the holidays, building relationships and making the season a little brighter for families in our community.

Thank you to the Elks Lodge members who flipped pancakes, poured coffee, and made everyone feel welcome, and to the Gladstone Police Department for the work they do year-round to connect with the people they serve. And thank you to everyone who showed up hungry and generous. This is what makes Gladstone such a special place to call home.

Any registered Clay County voter can vote in person before Election Day. You don't need a reason.

🕗 When: Monday–Saturday, 8 AM–5 PM, through Monday, November 2

♿ Curbside voting is available if you have limited mobility. Park and call the Election Board at 816-415-8683, and a bipartisan team will bring your ballot to your car. Every site also has accessible voting equipment.

Bring your photo ID. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3.

🌳 Storm Brush Drop-Off Available

Following last night's storms, Gladstone is offering free brush drop-off services for residents needing to dispose of fallen branches and storm debris.

Brush can be dropped off at the Gladstone Public Works facility beginning today, October 14, through Saturday, October 31.

🕘 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Proof of residency required.

Want to help shape Gladstone's future? The City is looking for residents to serve on our boards and commissions, and applications close this Friday, October 16th.

My own civic journey started exactly this way. I first served on the Comprehensive Plan Task Force, then on the Capital Improvements Program Committee, and later on the Planning Commission. Those experiences showed me how much residents can shape our city's direction. They're a big part of why I'm on the council today.

What a great evening at Gladstone City Hall! Thank you to everyone who joined us for last night's City Council meeting. It was wonderful to see such a full room.

The evening opened with a study session, where City Manager Bob Baer gave Council a status update on our 2026 goals. I'm proud to share that every goal is on track, and many are expected to exceed expectations by year-end. That progress reflects the hard work of our City Staff and the support of our residents. This week, the City Council and City Staff will hold our annual goal-setting session as we prepare for the 2027 fiscal year.

The regular City Council meeting began at 7:30 p.m.

We were honored to present a proclamation recognizing Chris Williams on his retirement. Chris is a founding member of Williams & Campo, PC, and has spent decades practicing law, with a particular focus on supporting governments and municipalities. He has served the City of Gladstone for a number of years and has become far more than a trusted partner to many on our Staff. He has become a friend. We will miss him, but Chris is leaving us in excellent hands. Over the last two years, he has been mentoring and developing two associates at the firm and introducing them to the City. Thank you, Chris, for your service to Gladstone, and congratulations on a well-earned retirement! 🎉

During public comment, Michael Jenkins praised our Parks Staff and Austin Greer for running an excellent Gladstone Smoke Fest, and he's already planning to be back next year! Thank you, Michael, and congratulations to the Parks team on another great event.

Council approved three items:
✅ Participation in the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) Regional Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program
✅ Final payment to the general contractor for the AJ Barn
✅ A change order for the ongoing improvements at the Water Treatment Plant

During Council comments, we shared several upcoming events and opportunities:
🎃 Friday Fright Night: Friday, October 16, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Happy Rock Park East. Kids 12 and under can enjoy trick-or-treating, hayrides, spooky scenes, and more. Admission is $3 per child, and proceeds benefit the Northland Christmas Store.
🥞 Shop with a Cop Benefit Breakfast: Saturday, October 24, 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Gladstone Elks Lodge. All-you-can-eat breakfast is $10 for adults and $5 for children, with tickets available at the door. There will also be raffle prizes, and all proceeds support the Gladstone Police Department's annual Shop with a Cop program.

🎃 Pumpkin Saturdays at Big Shoal Farm: Continuing this Saturday, October 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Explore the pumpkin field, pick out a pumpkin, and enjoy some fall photo opportunities. Admission to the field is free, and the event continues every Saturday until pumpkins sell out.
