It was a lighter agenda last night, but still plenty worth sharing!

🎗️ Constitution Week Proclamation
Council proclaimed September 17–23 as Constitution Week. Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution, William Boydston Chapter, joined us to accept the Proclamation — thank you for the work you do preserving our history!

🐾 Dunkin' Dogs Reminder

🚔 Highway Safety Program
Council approved a Bill continuing our participation in the Missouri Highway Safety Program, allowing the City to receive grant funds for vehicle-mounted radar units.

💧 Water Infrastructure
Council also approved three Resolutions supporting water infrastructure maintenance and ongoing stormwater mitigation efforts.

📅 Dates to Know
City Hall will be closed Monday, September 7, for Labor Day. Also — the September 14 Council meeting is cancelled due to lack of quorum, so all related business will move to our next meeting on September 28.

🌳 Parks Board Recap: Big Updates on Flora Park & Fall Events!

Great turnout tonight at the Parks Board meeting — lots to share with the community!

🏗️ Flora Park Phase 1
Progress continues! Crews have started installing playground equipment, and things are moving along nicely.

📋 Flora Park Phase 2
The RFP is out for bid, with award expected in the next few weeks. We're targeting a Fall 2026 completion — final date still TBD, but we'll keep you posted!

🛖 The AJ Barn
The Barn is officially open for events! Book your wedding, retirement party, anniversary celebration, awards banquet, birthday, and more at https://www.ajbarnevents.com/

💍 Wedding Ceremony Site
Construction is about to begin on the ceremony site, which will include a beautiful pergola. The first wedding is already booked for November! In total, 11 events are on the calendar so far.

Gladfest returns with the parade everyone loves. Mark your calendars!

🌻 Big Shoal Sunflower Festival Was a Blast!
Had such a great time at the Big Shoal Sunflower Festival this past Saturday! It was wonderful seeing so many families and kids out enjoying the beautiful weather and the outdoors at Big Shoal Farm. I picked up a gorgeous bouquet of sunflowers, and my friend found a beautiful handmade garden decoration from one of the talented vendors. A big thank you to Eugene Suter and the whole Big Shoal Farm team for putting on such a great event for our community!

🗓️ Sunflower Saturdays Continue!
Good news - you don't have to wait for another festival! Sunflower Saturdays will be happening every Saturday from 9am-3pm until they sell out. Great excuse for a weekend trip out to Big Shoal Farm.

🚪 AJ Barn Tours
The AJ Barn was also open for tours during the festival - such a beautiful event space! If you're planning a wedding, party, or gathering, you can book a date at ajbarnevents.com.

👗 New Exhibit at the Atkin-Johnson Museum
I also stopped by the Atkin-Johnson Museum to check out their new exhibit, all about weddings! They've got some incredible pieces on display, including a wedding dress from 1898. Definitely worth a visit if you love local history.

It's days like this that remind me why I love our Gladstone community. Thanks to everyone who came out and made it a great weekend!

📋 Gladstone City Council Recap — August 10, 2026
Here's a look at what happened at last night's City Council meeting!

🚧 North Oak Trafficway Update
The meeting opened with a Study Session on the North Oak Trafficway Road Improvement Project. Public Works Director Tim Nebergall, along with Chris Cline and Avery Nichols of Confluence, walked us through the project elements — including streetscaping, landscaping, and other great features coming to this corridor. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2027.

🏛️ New Board & Commission Appointments
Congratulations to our newest appointees:

Michael Jenkins — Board of Zoning Adjustment (term through December 2027)
John Houlihan — Planning Commission (term through December 2027)

Thank you both for stepping up to serve our community!

✅ Consent Agenda Highlights
Council approved acceptance of easements and right-of-way related to the North Oak project, along with a resolution to purchase 9 sets of personal protective structural firefighting gear (~$40,000).

🔥 Huge thanks to Gladstone Fire/EMS for writing the grant application, and to Firehouse Subs for providing the grant funding. Because of this partnership, our firefighters get more of the latest equipment — with zero impact to our fiscal budget!

🌻 Sunflower Field Festival — This Saturday!
Mark your calendars for the Sunflower Field Festival, Saturday, August 15th from 9am–3pm at Big Shoal Farm. This free event features sunflower picking, photo ops, an artist fair, children's crafts and games, and local food vendors. See you there!

🌻 Sunflower Saturdays Are Underway
Sunflower Saturdays at Big Shoal Farm continue every Saturday from 9am–3pm, while supplies last. Pick your own sunflowers, grab a pre-cut bouquet, or just enjoy some photo-worthy views out in the field.
