Councilmember Tom LaBonge, affectionately known as “Mr. Los Angeles,” famously drove his pickup truck through the city looking for everyday problems he could help solve. Though he’s no longer behind the wheel, his spirit lives on!

Five years ago, our department established the Tom LaBonge Day of Service to honor his legacy—a highlight of our annual Week. This Saturday marked 5 years of both! 🌟

Hosted at the iconic Crenshaw Christian Center in the Vermont Corridor, we joined the LaBonge family’s Tom LaBonge Civic Project alongside Council President Harris-Dawson staff and Mayor Karen Bass’s Shine LA initiative. A special moment of the morning included Mayor Bass paying tribute to the esteemed Dr. Betty Price for her dedicated leadership and service.
Afterward, our team worked alongside a massive turnout of volunteers and community partners to clean up neighborhoods across South LA. Together, we put into practice!

On Saturday, September 26, LA Civil Rights will join the 5th Annual Tom LaBonge Day of Service as part of Mayor Karen Bass’ Shine LA initiative. The event honors the late Councilmember Tom LaBonge, fondly remembered as “Mr. Los Angeles”. Tom's lifelong commitment to foster civic pride in Los Angeles was founded in core principles of volunteerism, and betterment of both community and our natural environment.

Sign up for the Shine LA Initiative to help build a more connected Los Angeles. Join volunteers from across Los Angeles for a community cleanup, continuing Tom LaBonge’s legacy of public service and his deep love for the city.
