Women lost 32,000 jobs in July according to the latest Labor Department report.

Numbers like these represent more than statistics. They're real women weighing whether they can afford to keep looking for work, stay in the workforce, or take on a job that doesn't offer enough hours or stability.

Economic empowerment is much more than a paycheck: It's having access to opportunity, the skills to compete for it, and a path to independence — especially when the job market is tougher.

What a way to kick off our new season of Justice for Her events! 🧡

Our first gathering brought together an incredible group of people for "The Power of Intersectionality," a frank and moving conversation about how race, gender, and lived experience shape the women and families we serve and the care they receive.

Huge thanks to our panelists Amber Sheikh (CEO & Owner, Sheikh/Impact) and Kendal Turner (EVP & CFO, LA County Economic Development Corporation) for sharing their time and wisdom, and our YWCA Greater Los Angeles Board Vice Chair Ronda Jackson for setting such a warm, vibrant tone for the evening.

We recently broke ground on our new North Valley Infant Learning Center, a modular classroom rising next to our North Valley Empowerment Center to bring infant childcare and development to even more wonderful San Fernando Valley families.

This represents our commitment to giving our youngest community members a safe and nurturing place to learn while their families build brighter futures.

A heartfelt thank you to the Ahmanson Foundation for their extraordinary generosity and investment in this vision, and to our partners, staff, Board, architects, and contractors who joined us to mark the moment.

As our CEO, Lori Carmona, noted on the day, "Today, we broke ground. Tomorrow, we build a stronger future."

Ten middle schoolers sat down with us this summer and told us what they really need from the adults in their lives.

Their message? Don't just build programs for us; build them with us.

"Listen to us," one of them said. And we plan to.

This work is part of YWCA USA's Youth Leadership in Action Initiative, a national effort we here in Los Angeles are proud to help lead as one of just seven YWCA associations selected nationwide, backed by a grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc.

Our preschoolers at our Angeles Mesa Child Development Center are learning to build body control, manage big feelings, and improve focus in our Yoga & Meditation class!
These practices aren’t just for grown-ups, and a little playful movement and mindful breathing can go a long way for our littlest learners.
