I convened County departments at today’s Board of Supervisors meeting to provide an update on the May 22 East Los Angeles oil spill, including environmental testing, cleanup efforts, public health guidance and efforts underway to support impacted residents and businesses.
 
The Board also approved my motion directing County departments to expand community outreach, provide regular updates on cleanup and testing, connect residents with available resources, and maintain a centralized source of information throughout the remediation process.
 
While the emergency response has concluded, our work is not over. I remain committed to protecting public health, ensuring transparency, and holding those responsible accountable as cleanup and recovery efforts move forward.

The Department of Justice’s decision to move toward dismissing the case against David Huerta, President of SEIU California and SEIU-United Service Workers West (USWW), confirms what many of us knew from the beginning: David should never have been targeted for standing up for workers and defending the rights of immigrants.
 
David was arrested while exercising his constitutional right to protest and advocate for workers who were being inhumanely detained and taken by masked federal agents as part of the Trump administration’s aggressive mass deportation campaign. These raids have terrorized communities across Los Angeles County, separating families and creating a climate of fear among those simply trying to live and work with dignity. This prosecution was never about public safety. It was about silencing a respected labor leader and discouraging others from speaking out against injustice.
 
I immediately joined the call for David’s release alongside union members, labor leaders and advocates, including Dolores Huerta, because we understood what was at stake. An attack on David was an attack on the fundamental freedoms to organize, protest and stand up for others.
 
For decades, David has been a tireless champion for working people, fighting for fair wages, safe workplaces and dignity on the job. His unwavering commitment to workers and immigrant families has made him one of the most respected voices in the labor movement.
 
As this case moves toward dismissal, we must remain vigilant in defending the constitutional rights that protect our democracy. I stand with David Huerta, with the workers and families impacted by these raids, and with all those who continue to fight for justice.

One month after the Lineage Logistics warehouse fire, I convened a Board presentation to review recovery efforts, provide updates for residents and continue demanding accountability from Lineage. Since the fire, my office has distributed more than 11,500 air purifiers, food boxes, cases of water and N95 masks, directed the canvassing of nearly 700 homes, and connected families, workers and small businesses with critical resources. As recovery continues, I remain focused on ensuring impacted communities receive the support they need and that Lineage is held accountable for the harm caused by this incident.

In the aftermath of unimaginable loss, the USA-2 Urban Search and Rescue Task Force, comprised of firefighters, search and rescue specialists and canine teams, traveled thousands of miles to help people in Venezuela during their greatest moment of need. They brought expertise, courage and hope to communities facing extraordinary hardship, reminding us that humanity is strongest when we stand together. My team and I continue to be on the ground, connecting residents to air purifiers, masks, food, water and other resources available as recovery efforts remain underway. This week, distributions continue at Salazar Park, from 11AM to 3PM. I know residents in East LA continue to be deeply impacted by the aftermath of the Lineage Logistics warehouse fire, and I am committed to ensuring community needs remain at the center of the County’s response efforts.

I was proud to celebrate seven sidewalk vendors who received no-cost, health code-compliant food carts through County of Los Angeles Sidewalk Vending Cart Program. These carts provide vendors with the resources they need to operate safely, meet health requirements, and take the next step in growing their businesses.
 
I also announced an additional $250,000 investment to provide 19 more integrated grill carts for eligible vendors in unincorporated areas of the San Gabriel Valley, bringing the County’s total investment in the program to $1.78 million.
 
Sidewalk vendors are an essential part of our communities, strengthening our local economy while embodying the culture and diversity that makes Los Angeles County unique.  Through this program, vendor receive not only a cart, but permitting support, technical assistance, public health resources, and other tools to help them build sustainable businesses right here in our local neighborhoods.
