Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation

Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation Advancing the humanitarian legacy of Biddy Mason by serving foster youth and sharing Black history.

The Biddy Mason Charitable Foundation began as an outreach ministry of First African Methodist Episcopal (F.A.M.E.) Church of Los Angeles in 2013 and then became an independent 501c3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to serving current and former foster youth in LA County. The foundation is named for Bridget “Biddy” Mason, the organizer of First AME Church of Los Angeles. A former slave, B

iddy Mason petitioned a Los Angeles Court in 1856 and was granted her freedom. She became a legendary figure in the early Los Angeles community, not only for her astute business acumen, but for her philanthropy. Trained as a midwife she began her career earning $2.50 per day and later became a millionaire. We hope her entrepreneurial and pioneering spirit will serve as inspiration to current and former foster care youth.

In case you missed it: Here’s the full Fox 11 clip of our president and CEO, Jackie Broxton, with Dr. Demontea Thompson, co-founder of Twinspire and BMCF scholarship recipient!

For years, statistics have shown that foster youth don’t get college degrees—but that narrative is changing.

🎓 Tae is one of five former foster youth the BMCF has supported through their doctoral program and among hundreds we’ve helped pursue undergrad, master’s, and vocational degrees.

Like our namesake Biddy Mason, our faith in education as a cycle-breaker remains strong. THANK YOU to Christine Devine - News Anchor for spotlighting Tae, to all our friends who make our scholarship program possible, and congrats Dr. Thompson on your PhD from UCLA!

Please take a moment to read this thoughtful piece by BMCF scholarship recipient and former foster youth, Sarai, about this local LA crisis and how to reverse its impact.

When people hear “human trafficking,” they imagine something distant, another country, another city, another community. That narrative allows us to feel safe. It is also dangerously wrong! Human trafficking is happening in Pomona. It is not rare. It is not accidental. And it is not simply a crim...

Today we celebrate Brandon T. Nichols and his impact as director of LA’s Department of Children and Family Services for the last four years!

Brandon led with compassion and belief in LA’s youth. His job has not been an easy one, and we’re so grateful for how he and his team have supported BMCF and the current and former foster youth we serve. As he steps down from his role this summer, we wish him all the best in what’s next!
