El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument is the birthplace of Los Angeles and the city's oldest historic district. Founded in September 1781 near a Tongva-Native American village, El Pueblo encompasses the area where forty-four settlers from present-day Northern Mexico of Indigenous, African, and Spanish heritage journeyed more than one-thousand miles to established a new city for New Spain. Since that time, Los Angeles has been under the flags of Spain, Mexico and the United States and has grown into one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas. Managed by the City of Los Angeles, El Pueblo is a living museum that continues to fulfill its unique role as the historic and symbolic heart of the city, reflecting the diverse multiculturalism that contributed to its early history.

Tomorrow, September 16 the Council of Mexican Federations (COFEM) will present an afternoon of free cultural performances, live music, and traditional entertainment to celebrate Mexican Independence Day! Performances are scheduled in the Plaza Kiosko from 12:00-5:00 p.m. The Colgate "Bright Smiles" van will also be on site providing free dental kits to families.

Explore that history with a FREE walking tour led by the docents of Las Angelitas del Pueblo. Tours of El Pueblo Historical Monument feature Olvera Street, Pico House, Avila Adobe, and other significant landmarks.
