El Pueblo Historical Monument

El Pueblo Historical Monument El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument is the birthplace of Los Angeles and the home of world famous Olvera Street.

El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument is the birthplace of Los Angeles and the city's oldest historic district. Founded in September 1781 near a Tongva-Native American village, El Pueblo encompasses the area where forty-four settlers from present-day Northern Mexico of Indigenous, African, and Spanish heritage journeyed more than one-thousand miles to established a new city for New Spain. S

ince that time, Los Angeles has been under the flags of Spain, Mexico and the United States and has grown into one of the world’s largest metropolitan areas. Managed by the City of Los Angeles, El Pueblo is a living museum that continues to fulfill its unique role as the historic and symbolic heart of the city, reflecting the diverse multiculturalism that contributed to its early history.

Jada Jones, our El Pueblo Getty Marrow Undergraduate Intern, had the unique opportunity to help curate our current historical exhibition at the Tranquilo Gallery, Preserving the Past, Enlightening the Future. The exhibition highlights the rich history and legacy of the Olvera Street merchants through a compelling collection of historic photo negatives, oral history interviews conducted by Sebastian, and contemporary film photographs by Gabe. Jada's contributions helped bring these important stories to life, preserving the voices and experiences that continue to shape El Pueblo's cultural heritage.
