Meet the scholar behind the story.
Dr. Saladin Ambar is a political scientist at Rutgers University and author of Murder on the Mississippi: The Shocking Crimes that Shaped Abraham Lincoln.

His work takes us beyond the Lincoln of monuments and history books to examine the experiences, violence, and political upheaval that helped shape Lincoln's ideas about slavery, equality, law, and democracy.

This October, Dr. Ambar brings that story to Louisville as the featured speaker for Farmington's Annual History Lecture.

What could a horrific crime in 1836 have to do with the Abraham Lincoln we know today? The lynching of Francis McIntosh, a young free Black man in St. Louis, became part of a larger story of mob violence, slavery, and growing lawlessness in America. Dr. Saladin Ambar's Murder on the Mississippi examines how these events helped shape Lincoln's emerging political ideas and his growing opposition to slavery.
