The 8th of August honors emancipation finally arriving in Kentucky and parts of Tennessee.

Here at a place shaped by the history of enslavement, we know that freedom’s story is complicated, deeply human, and still unfolding.

Locust Grove will be honoring the 8th of August with Hannah Drake and the (un)Known Project. Join us as we honor those who were enslaved at Locust Grove by reading their names.

We also encourage you to learn more about Paducah’s rich 8th of August tradition at Hotel Metropolitan. Thank you to Ms. Betty Dobson for sharing her time and knowledge with us. She is a true Kentucky treasure.

The Jingle Dress Dance has carried healing across generations.

On the morning of America’s 250th birthday, Lydia Green-Miller, Lauren Kron, Shalisa Mitchell, and Johanna Mitchell brought that healing to this land.

We are immensely grateful for them bringing their presence, art, and culture to our land.
