Historic Locust Grove tells the story of its owners, William and Lucy Clark Croghan, Gen. George Rogers Clark, and the men, women, and children enslaved by the Croghan and Clark families. Be sure to stop by the Visitor Center to see the ever-changing merchandise in the museum store; the visitor center museum features early Louisville, pioneer Kentucky and the American Revolutionary wars - all three of them. This site is always busy with tours, special events, weddings, camps, workshops and classes for kids and adults.

Join us on October 7th in welcoming Ed Hamilton, renowned sculptor, and Sarah Battle, archive collections consultant of Ed Hamilton Studios & Visitors Center, for a conversation spanning the five decades of his career as an artist.

In 2002, the city of Louisville commissioned sculptor and Louisvillian Ed Hamilton to create a memorial dedicated to York, the enslaved man instrumental to the success of the Lewis & Clark expedition. Using Locust Grove’s maquette of York as well as Mr. Hamilton’s archival collection as points of departure, this program celebrates this public work within the larger conversation of Hamilton’s artistic career.

Doors open at 12:30 PM for drinks and refreshments, and the lecture will begin at 1 PM.

Yesterday at Historic Locust Grove, we had the profound honor of welcoming our newest American citizens during our naturalization ceremony.

For centuries, presidents, explorers, enslaved families, and original stewards like the Shawnee have shaped the history of this land. Today, a new chapter was written by these individuals who took the oath of citizenship.

Thank you so much to all of our partners who make this work possible including our civics sponsor, Independence Bank, Youth Performing Arts School, League of Women Voters, New American Initiatives, Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution, and the Kentucky Office of Refugees.

On this day in 1787, the U.S. Constitution was signed.

When the Framers wrote “We the People,” they handed ultimate power (and responsibility) to us, ordinary citizens. Thus, our American experiment only works when we are active participants in it, not just bystanders.

Did you know that the U.S. Constitution was directly inspired by this indigenous system of self government?

The Great Law of Peace was the oral constitution developed by the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. It united six different Native American nations under a set of principles that Ben Franklin later wrote into the U.S. Constitution.

It emphasized how we should consider future generations when making decisions, prompting the question:

As a site dedicated to Louisville history, Historic Locust Grove encourages community dialogue from all eras of the past, and the events of 9/11 are no exception.
After 25 years, the events of that day are still so fresh for those who experienced it, as well as a learning opportunity for those who were young or not yet born.
We invite you to share your recollections in a way that keeps this goal in mind: history is a tool to help people understand how we got here.
Things we see as normal today are a direct result of 9/11, including the 24-hour news cycle, airport security measures like shoes off & fluid restrictions, and even flashlights on cell phones.
Please remain respectful in the comments as you share your recollections.
