Headquartered in Macon's historic Washington Memorial Library, Middle Georgia Regional Library serves Bibb, Crawford, Jones, Macon, Twiggs, Wilkinson, and Baldwin counties in Central Georgia. We are affiliated with Georgia PINES. MGRL hosts 17 outlets including the Library Without Walls (WoW), the Genealogical & Historical Department, Middle Georgia Archives, and the Business and Nonprofit Center

Are you a member of a club or social group? If so, you may be helping preserve democracy without even realizing it!

You can learn about how community connections are central to American civic society with our free screening of the documentary, Join or Die, co-presented with Bibb Community Partnership.

This film is based on the research of Robert Putnam, author of Bowling Alone, and explores how America’s future depends on social organizations and clubs.

Join us at the Macon Mall’s meeting space next Tuesday at 5:30 PM for a community discussion followed by the screening of Join or Die at 6:00 PM. This event is recommended for viewers 18+.

Are you a small business owner or aspiring entrepreneur? Stop by Washington Memorial Library on Wednesday, September 2 from 6:00 to 7:00 PM for Small Business Financial Literacy. You can hear experts from SparkMacon discuss how you can grow your business, attract new customers, and expand into new markets!

Come visit the Crawford County Public Library and help us kick off our month-long Story Stroll program! Starting this Thursday, September 3, you can drop in any time between 10:30 AM and 4:30 PM every Wednesday and Thursday to enjoy an outdoor walk along pages from the storybook, Abuela by Arthur Dorros.

🐝 See what all the buzz is about at the Charles A. Lanford, M.D. Library!

Last week, this branch hosted its annual Great Southeast Pollinator Census Counting Event with guest speaker and beekeeper extraordinaire, Bruce Harper!

Patrons of all ages stopped in to hear a reading of The Great Pollinator Count by Susan Edwards Richmond, then Bruce gave a special presentation about pollinators, insect conservation and identification.

🦋 Did you know that the Charles A. Lanford, M.D. Library has a butterfly garden in its big back yard? This garden is part of the Rosalynn Carter Butterfly Trail, and contains plants that are friendly to pollinators like butterflies and bees!

Come see us at this branch to explore the big back yard and learn how you can plant your own butterfly garden using seeds from our seed library!

We are deeply saddened by the passing of singer, songwriter, and literacy advocate, Dolly Parton.

A household name, Dolly’s legacy spans far beyond her decades-long music and film career. She was also a philanthropist, whose work of promoting literacy and education touched millions of lives.

In 1995, Dolly Parton established the Imagination Library to deliver free books to children in her childhood home of Sevier County, Tennessee. What started as a dream to close literacy gaps in her community eventually grew to become an international effort with measurable impact.

Since its inception, the Imagination Library has gifted more than 300 million books to children all over the world, including audiobooks and braille books. Families who receive these books have reported significant improvements in their children’s literacy skills, with more frequent reading habits and greater interest in books.

Dolly Parton’s work continues to inspire us as her passion for books and reading aligns with our vision of a literate, engaged, and enlightened community. We encourage you to stop by the Cathy Ivey Community Library and explore this book display honoring Dolly’s memory.

These books are available through any of our library branches, and we invite you to join us in celebrating the legacy of Dolly Parton, champion of literacy.

Here are a few events happening this week in our libraries:

Drop in for a children’s Story Time at the Montezuma Public Library from 3:30 to 4:30 PM on Tuesday, August 25. Kids can hear staff read aloud from a book to help them develop their Print Literacy skills, then participate in a game or craft activity to keep them engaged with what they learned from the story!

Come learn about Google Sheets and strengthen your Digital Literacy skills with a computer class on Wednesday, August 26 from 4:00 to 5:00 PM at the Washington Memorial Library. This class will teach you how to create and use free spreadsheets in Google to help you with things like business inventory or managing your finances.

If you love Young Adult books or if you’re looking for something new and interesting to read, stop by the Mary Vinson Memorial Library on Friday, August 28 from 12:30 to 1:30 PM for the We Read YA Book Club! This book club is designed for ages 13 and up to meet with other readers and discuss what they’ve read. This month we are reading The Cruel Prince by Holly Black.
