Updates in the Meridian Mall area:

Police have cleared the area around the Meridian Mall. There is no danger to the public at this time.

The mall is now open, and business has resumed as normal.

The Meridian Township Police Department is investigating a suspicious package found near the Meridian Mall.

As a precaution, please avoid the southeast area of the mall and use alternate routes until further notice.

It's the first Saturday of the month, so time for the 1pm activation of the countywide outdoor warning siren system! Don't let that interrupt your plans - just consider where you would go if a severe storm was in the area at that time...

During weather events, these will be sounded for tornadoes OR for extreme winds. Other hazards may also be considered based on the threat.

A siren simply means "get somewhere safe and check reliable sources - like this page - for more information." This is only a test!

It has been a wet start to the month! The county picked up a good inch to 1.5" but now we're switching in a cooler and VERY dry pattern... It could be a bit before our next rain with more "normal" fall temperatures for a bit.

Every five years, we are required to update our Hazard Mitigation Plan in order to be eligible for funds to support our community after disasters, and even better - mitigation efforts to reduce the harm in the first place!

We started the process for our next cycle prior to the current one expiring in 2028. As we get underway, we'll look for insight from the community as well to find out what concerns you have and what ideas might be out there to keep us safer!

FEMA declared a "Major Disaster" for parts of Michigan due to severe weather and flooding that occurred from April 10-26, 2026. Even though we missed the worst of those storms, because some neighboring counties were hit hard, farmers in Ingham County may qualify for disaster assistance.

Producers looking to see if they’re eligible should contact the Ingham County Farm Service Agency to inquire and apply.

Due to the ongoing impacts of a significant power outage and the resulting loss of steam and hot water service affecting portions of our campus, Michigan State University will transition to online instruction and remote work, where possible, through Monday evening. These transitions will start today at 9 a.m., and go through Monday evening at 11 p.m. and are limited to the East Lansing campus only. This choice has been made to reduce the impact to our systems during this temporary impact to service. Michigan State University has restored power to the majority of campus following the outage at the T.B. Simon Power Plant. Crews continue working to bring the remaining buildings fully online and additional updates will be provided.

Power is beginning to come back online in some areas of campus, and crews are continuing their work to restore full service. Complete restoration will take additional time. Thank you for your patience as this work continues.

Michigan State University has experienced a failure at the T.B. Simon Power Plant that supplies power to campus. The source of the failure has been identified, and crews are diligently working to repair the issue.

The T.B. Simon Power Plant produces electricity and steam power for campus. Once the power plant comes back online, power is methodically restored to all the buildings and campus facilities over a period of time. The university is optimistic that power will be restored by the morning.

University staff are located at residence halls to assist students in entering buildings should they experience access issues. Students should enter buildings through main entrances.

As a result of the power outage, those on campus may be experiencing an impact to cellular service across all carriers. The university is actively communicating with cellular providers to alleviate the issue, including Verizon Wireless that has delivered mobile units to campus to help improve service.

Patrol officers with MSU Department of Police and Public Safety are available throughout campus and are connecting with campus neighborhood staff for support. Light towers are in place at intersections on campus; please use caution when driving.

The campus community should be aware that MSU DPPS Green Light phones may not be working; please call or text 911 in the event of an emergency.

The university does not yet have an estimated time for power to be restored and anticipates it may still be hours until campus is fully restored. As a result of the power outage, those on campus may be experiencing an impact to cellular service across all carriers. The university is actively communicating with cellular providers to alleviate the issue, including Verizon Wireless that is working to bring mobile units to campus to improve service.

We have experienced a widespread power outage on campus. The MSU Infrastructure Planning and Facilities Team is currently working to quickly identify and diagnose the issue. Besides the power outage itself, there is no threat to campus.

As part of MSU's ongoing efforts to enhance safety, the MSU Police and Public Safety is committed to testing their various mass notification methods to demonstrate how those on campus can receive information during a threat or emergency. At 10am today their system was activated for a TEST drill only.

In addition to the alerts sent to students, faculty, and staff, Ingham County has the ability to send an urgent message to all cellphones in the area as part of the Wireless Emergency Alert system.

That features was used today, but was set to ONLY alert those phones who have enabled test messages so most would not have received this. In a real event, anyone in the red circled area (that can be fine tuned as needed) would be sent a WEA on their phones regardless of having any apps installed.
