Race Smith has always been someone who looks for ways to help others. And when he learned someone close to his family needed a transplant, his response was simple: “I’ll do it.”

There was just one challenge. Race wasn’t a match.

Through the paired kidney exchange program at Miami Transplant Institute, he was able to help. Race donated his kidney to another compatible recipient, helping create a chain that allowed the person he hoped to help to receive a kidney from another donor.

The journey brought Race from his hometown of Searcy, Arkansas, to Miami for extensive testing, preparation, and ultimately, donation surgery. Months later, he was back at work and sharing his experience with his local community in hopes that others might consider living donation too.

“It hurt bad enough that I’ll never do it again, but not so bad that I regret it,” Race joked. For him, seeing the difference his decision made confirmed that he had made the right choice.

The Women's Hospital at Jackson Memorial Medical Center is proud to introduce our newly renovated Obstetric Emergency Room, open 24/7 and staffed exclusively by obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, nurses, and midwives who specialize in pregnancy and postpartum care.

Unlike a traditional ER, our OB-ER means shorter wait times, faster triage, and a team focused entirely on maternal health. Whether you're experiencing contractions, bleeding, decreased baby movement, or just something that doesn't feel right, we're here, any time of day or night.

This newly renovated space is part of the Karlie Kloss Center for Maternal Health, made possible through a gift from the Joshua Kushner and Karlie Kloss Foundation. 💙
