Sometimes the best thing to do is sit.

Sit with people. Just be. Show up. Be present. Engage. Listen.

These are things we talk about at Hope Street and genuinely strive to do each day. Sometimes, when we have new volunteers and tell them we just want them to be present, they can't wrap their minds around it.

"So what do I actually do?"

Just be here. Showing up consistently tells our members, our staff, and everyone around that you care, you're invested in what happens here, and that you want to be part of it. It's not easy-- it's for sure easier to give someone a task list to tackle. But sometimes that's not the best thing.

Sometimes the best thing to do is sit. And see what God does.

Each Monday, a group of guys gathers at Shechem from 4-6. They get to talk about real issues men are facing, work through strategies on how to deal with life like emotional regulation, and enjoy community through basketball and a meal.

This is what Shechem is all about. A safe place where hope is cultivated, and community is built. Thank you, Mike, for leading this group and bringing so much positivity to this space!

"On that day, I was dreaming of a different space that they [kids at Hope Street] could join their classmates, their cousins, and friends inside of. A building that, to many, would not make sense because it would be too big, too nice, and too expensive for our part of town. It would be a building that would be a refuge for men, women, and children to explore, to learn, to work, and let's not forget, have fun. It would be a special place that would lead to change in the disturbing statistics plaguing our zip code. We are often a place defined by unemployment, incarceration for African American males, and low graduation rates. This space could be a place where the "other" becomes authentically known and loved, because for once, they could be seen in their rightful light: a child of the King, with a given name and a given purpose."

Today, those dreams have become a reality. Shechem is full of hundreds of people each week... men, women, and children who are known and loved, who get the chance to learn and play. What a joy to get to experience the other side of the story.

If you've been to one of our events before, you know that there is beauty and creativity bursting from every corner of the venue!! This year is no exception. We have been working on creative projects for the last several months, with many volunteers and groups contributing their time. It's been amazing, and we are ecstatic to see things coming together. As we enter the last few weeks of gala prep, there are some items we need to make the vision come to life. If you aren't a hands-on crafter like some, maybe you can help another way!
