Today we honor Norman Francis, who had a number of firsts. He was the first African American to earn a JD degree from Loyola University, the first African American President of Xavier University in New Orleans, and later helped form the Liberty Bank of New Orleans. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006. #BlackHistoryMonth

The School-based Mentoring Program hosted Trivia Night for families over Zoom. Both the parents and kids learned a lot, like the fact BBBS Milwaukee served 1,260 kids last year, that The Weeknd will perform at the Super Bowl this year and that the longest winning streak in the NBA is held by the LA Lakers. Families were thrilled to have fun together and so was the staff who enjoyed seeing our families faces on the screen and exchanging many laughs!
Today we are highlighting Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space! On September 12, 1992 Mae boarded the space shuttle, Endeavor, spending 190 hours in space. Fun fact: Mae speaks four different languages-- English, Russian, Japanese and Swahili!

January's Game Day was a Big success! We had a sampler of games to explore the power of play. Everyone got on their feet, moved around, learned how to play games you can do on your own, and met other matches. Thanks to our guest Coach PJ from Playworks Wisconsin, who taught us some fun games to play together. We finished the day with animal alphabet tag, and silly story scramble. #StrongerTogether #makerecesscount

In the fourth year of their match in the mentor2.0 program, Mentor Brandon has worked hard to prepare Mentee Gabriel for his upcoming graduation and life after high school. Even though he is the one mentoring, Brandon shared “the opportunity to try and bring a different perspective to a young man’s life has brought me overall confidence that I can give back a small fraction of what so many people have done for me in my past.”
Happy #NationalMentoringMonth! Thank you for all the you do, Brandon.
