Meet our 2020 LGBTQ+ Scholarship Recipients!

Steph is a Social Work student at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, double minoring in Criminal Justice & Journalism with an LGBT Studies Certificate. Their career goal is to work in public policy to create an LGBTQ+ youth social work program.

Gus is currently enrolled in Marquette University's Law School while continuing her career as a welfare social worker. A queer activist and community advocate, she hopes to become a family attorney specializing in LGBTQ+ families and youth.

Meet our 2020 LGBTQ+ Scholarship Recipients!

Leo is a student at Cardinal Stritch University pursuing a degree in History & Political Science. He strives to inspire other LGBTQ+ students no matter how they identify to engage in the professional world, hoping to one day teach at a major university.

Abby is a New Studio Practice BFA student at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, minoring in Psychology and Arts Management. Exploring sexuality, response, femininity, and mental health, she hopes to explore Art Therapy and other educational and community practices.

Meet our 2020 LGBTQ+ Scholarship Recipients, both of whom
proudly represent Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design pursuing Bachelors of Fine Arts.

Michie challenges themself to connect with their own personal truths no matter how taboo, painful, or human, and embody them through various media for others to identify with. They hope to one day create a film, have a traveling exhibition, and publish a book.

Sara is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus in poetry, sculpture, and video. Drawing inspiration from her Mexican American culture, she challenges perceptions of femininity, gender, Latinx representation and one day hopes to teach the therapeutic quality of expression that art possesses to BIPOC and LGBTQ+ youth.

Meet our 2020 LGBTQ+ Scholarship Recipients!

Victoria is the first trans woman to attend Alverno College, working toward an undergrad dual-degree in Education and Music Performance. Through activism, she builds bridges between all facets of her life, including her Catholic and LGBTQ+ communities.

Charmaine is an African & African Diaspora Studies doctorate student at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. She belongs to a community of activist black women and queer writers committed to disrupting oppressive narratives through their craft.

Lorena currently attends WCTC - Waukesha County Technical College, pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. She works as a programmer and is committed to representing the female, LGBTQ+ and Latinx communities in STEM.

Rachael is a medical student at Medical College of Wisconsin, committed to cultivating environments of safety and pride through activism, education and diversity. She hopes to address the disparities in cancer care for minority and LGBTQ+ communities.

Amy Stuhlmacher is a graduate Family Nurse Practitioner student at Alverno’s College of Nursing. As a pediatric RN at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin for the past 22 years, Amy recognizes the immense need for change in healthcare and legislation for the LGBTQ+ community and is committed to work with at-risk, underserved, and LGBTQ+ youth through integrity, purpose, and values.

Adriana Rodriguez is a student of the Urban Education Doctoral Program at UW-Milwaukee, specializing in Social Foundations of Education. She facilitates sociopolitical programming and leadership development workshops on campus while serving on the Equity & Justice Priority Group. She is a social justice educator, focused on building learning spaces that reduce oppression and harm, and hopes to expand work to include best practices for Diversity & Inclusion work in Higher Education.

Justin Roby is pursuing a graduate degree in Organizational Leadership & Administration from Concordia-Wisconsin after serving the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee in various roles over the past 11 years. With a background as an educator and experience with at-risk populations, Justin intends to be a leader within the organization and a change agent for his community—specifically for disenfranchised youth.

Kim Otzelberger is studying Media Design with a focus on Film at Alverno College. She acts as Co-President of the college’s Gay-Straight Alliance and Alverno’s Film Club President while fulfilling roles as orientation leader, peer leader, and junior counselor on top of a full credit load. Kim remains a steadfast advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights—not only at Alverno, but also in her work with film.

Ash O’Higgins-Lowrey is a MIAD student, aspiring to be an independent artist who continues to use their skills to heighten the community. In their hometown of DeKalb, Ill., Ash aided in numerous community events through photography, social media influence, and peaceful artistic demonstration and has been awarded for those efforts from regional and national sources. Through their work, they hope inform, connect, and rise with the communities around them.

Dawn Matlak is working toward an Associates in Accounting from MATC after several years serving professional roles as a cooperative business developer, financial coach for housing-insecure mothers, “Redistribution of Wealth” workshop facilitator, and finance manager for two non-profit funds. Currently, they are focused on assisting young adults with navigating economic systems and building financial literacy and creating affordable housing for Milwaukee’s LGBTQ+ communities.

Victor Magana is a med student at the Medical College of Wisconsin, having graduated from Marquette University with a degree in Biomedical Sciences. He’s currently serving as Co-President of two student organizations, both of which aim to provide opportunities and outreach for Underrepresented in Medicine minority populations to create a healthier and thriving community. As a future physician, he hopes to work and give back to the underrepresented communities, especially the LGBTQ+ community.

Twelve Milwaukee-area students were named recipients of the 2019 Cream City Foundation LGBTQ+ Scholarship. This October, we will be showcasing this talented and driven cohort of future LGBTQ+ leaders.

Hugo Ljungbäck is a queer video artist, film curator, and media scholar attending UW-Milwaukee. He is an Undergraduate Research Fellow, focused on the intersection of video art, surveillance, labor, and queer cinema, and his videos and writings have appeared on screens and publications across national and international galleries. He is also Chair of the UWM Moving Image Society, and programmer for the Milwaukee Underground Film Festival.

Mallory Krumrei is pursuing a Masters degree from the UWM Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health. As a fierce advocate for the “Health in All Policies” approach, they study how various sociopolitical processes perpetuate LGBTQ+ health disparities. Specifically, Mallory’s previous work has explored the disproportionate prevalence of tobacco use, survival sex, and mental illness among LGBTQ+ and minority communities.

We are a 501(c)3 Tax Exempt Organization History Cream City Foundation was founded in 1982 and is celebrating over 27 years of giving to LGBT communities. Cream City Foundation was originally spun-off from the Cream City Business Association, a Milwaukee based association of LGBT business owners formed to promote LGBT entrepreneurship and business support for LGBT communities. Initially begun with $500 in seed money, Cream City Foundation has grown to provide over $700,000 in grant dollars to many organizations and projects that are working to improve the quality of life for LGBT people.
