What does "optimal size" mean for our schools?

Optimal size means a school has enough students to meet the minimum enrollment needed to fund the academic and social-emotional experience that families have asked for and students deserve.

It's one of the ideas shaping MPS School Transformation, our districtwide effort to make sure every student has access to a consistent and reliable educational experience, no matter which school they attend.

See the graphic to explore how the numbers break down for minimum enrollment at each school level. The number depends on the share of students who qualify for educational benefits (FRL).

We are to celebrate Emerson Dual Language School Assistant Principal Liliana Rodriguez, who was named a 2026 Bush Fellow!

The prestigious fellowship recognizes her leadership and commitment to advancing equity, multilingual learning and community‑centered education. Congratulations! 🎉

Liliana is an education leader who celebrates students who speak multiple languages and thinks we can do more to view those skills as unique advantages for our schools.

Her vision is to redesign education systems so that multilingualism is treated as an asset and schools operate as true partners with families and communities.

Through the Bush Fellowship, Liliana will pursue her superintendent’s license, learn more about governance and finance and broaden her network of statewide and international leaders in multilingual education.
