Our American Indian Scholars celebrated the completion of their summer session with a showcase highlighting their learning, creativity and community! 🌟

A collaboration between MPS American Indian Education and Community Education, the program is grounded in culturally responsive teaching and enriched by Dakota and Ojibwe language and culture.

Scholars entering grades 1-9 strengthened literacy skills, built connections, and explored arts, sports, field trips and more. They also learned the tradition and craftsmanship of lacrosse by building their own sticks from scratch!

The Aug. 4 showcase brought it all together with student artwork, songs, a fashion show and a lacrosse game. We’re incredibly proud of all our scholars shared, created and learned together.

"The two highlights of my internship at Minneapolis Public Schools Culinary & Wellness Services were creating my vegetable garden and getting to teach MPS students about gardening, cooking, and nutrition. Students bring so much curiosity and energy, and I hope they’ll have the chance to experience the joy of starting a garden themselves someday.

Throughout this experience, I've developed school gardening curriculum which includes six lesson plans tailored to grade levels K-5. The topics of these lesson plans range from plant basics to farm-to-school to nutrition and culture, all connecting back to school gardening. Each lesson plan includes a guided lecture, activities, and teacher's guides with associated academic standards."

Thank you, Maddy, for interning with us this summer! We are so grateful for your amazing teamwork, enthusiasm for garden experiments, and dedication to developing fun activities for MPS students to learn about our food system!

Welcome to MPS and Washburn High School, Dr. Raabe! 🤩🎉

We are delighted to introduce you to our new principal, Dr. Alisha Raabe!

Here is a message from Dr. Raabe:

I am beyond excited for the opportunity to join the amazing Washburn community. In my short time here, I’ve already noticed what a special place this is, and I look forward to becoming an active member of such a caring and passionate school community.

Prior to being named Principal at Washburn, I spent my career in education with the Madison Metropolitan School District in Madison, WI. Most recently, I served as an Assistant Principal at La Follette High School, where I was also the Athletic Director. Before transitioning into administration, I taught Biology, Chemistry, and science classes for multilingual learners. I truly love being a school administrator and thrive on getting to know our students, staff, and families to ensure everyone’s high school experience is a positive one.

You could say I’m a Badger in Gopher country! My degrees are all from the University of Wisconsin–Madison: a BS in Biology and Italian, an MS in Curriculum and Instruction, an MS in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis, and a PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis. While I’ve been a lifelong Badger (and will always love the Packers!), I’m excited to cheer on and follow local teams.

Having recently relocated to Minneapolis, I am thrilled to explore the city and call it home. Outside of school, I have a husband and a two-year-old son, and I’m looking forward to building wonderful memories with them in this next chapter of our lives.

This is going to be a great school year and I am grateful to be a part of it! Go Millers!
