Democratic Debate, 2026

Democratic Candidate Benjamin Schauer Receives No Response to Debate Invitation from Republican Jason Sherer

Democratic Candidate for Iowa House District 15 Benjamin Schauer expressed concern today over Republican challenger Jason Sherer’s failure to respond to an invitation to participate in a series of debates ahead of the November 3, 2026 general election.

“I’m disappointed by Jason Sherer’s unwillingness to participate in these debates, especially since he showed up for the primary,” said Schauer, referring to a Republican primary forum hosted on May 2nd in Missouri Valley. “To me, this says that Jason is afraid to debate the issues outside of the safety of the Republican Party structure.”

The proposed debates would provide voters with opportunities to meet the candidates, learn about their priorities, and hear their positions on the pressing issues impacting Western Iowa. Schauer requested three debates to be held across House District 15.

“This behavior is reminiscent of outgoing Representative Matt Windschitl’s refusal to debate during the 2024 election cycle,” Schauer continued. “It was disappointing then and even more disappointing now, especially with an open seat. When candidates decline opportunities for public discussion, voters lose the opportunity to judge the candidates side by side and in real time.

We deserve better than generic one-line policy statements on Jason’s website, and we deserve better than a Windschitl 2.0 who avoids the issues because he thinks the “R” after his name will be enough to carry him toelection victory.”

Sherer was not the only candidate to receive an invitation. Marilyn Mentzer, an independent candidate from Harrison County, responded to the invitation within hours of the initial request on June 6th and suggested livestreaming at least one of the proposed debates.

Blake Johnson, a second independent candidate, also received an invitation and has remained in communication regarding the proposal.

“Anyone asking for the public’s trust should be willing to stand before voters, answer questions, and make their case for why their vision is best for the future of Western Iowa,” Schauer finished. “Our team will be moving forward with debate planning alongside any candidate who wishes to participate.

I sincerely hope that Jason Sherer will reconsider his position and join us.”
