It is with profound sadness that we regret to inform you of the passing of Firefighter and Life Member John A. Braunagel Jr.
John was born into a prominent Monroe family with ties to Lakeside. On October 2, 1987 at the age of 18, John was entered into the rolls at Lakeside Fire & Rescue. He was sponsored for membership by his late father, John Braunagel Sr. John later joined the FDNY. On that fateful day of September 11, 2001, John answered the call. John leaves behind a loving wife, three children, and a grandchild.
Due to his efforts on September 11, John medically resigned from our ranks in January 2026 when he could no longer meet the physical demands of being a volunteer. While John was not physically present with us everyday these past 6 months and fighting his own battle with cancer, he still called me every day to check in, check on the crew and make sure he could help in any way possible.
John could be measured top of the class in two realms, physical stature and EQ (Emotional Quotient). John is the glue that held us together; he chaired the membership committee and was our Vice President; he knew everyone at Lakeside. He knew because he cared. He trained them, he mentored them, he wanted the best for them.
John was at every fire safety demonstration supporting me. John was the chauffeur the first time I sat in the officer seat. John was always in my corner encouraging me to strive for more; to be the best husband, father, and volunteer firefighter that I could be. John knew when to crack a joke and how to bust chops. In John’s final days, he wanted two things from me: that his beloved wife would be taken care of and that Lakeside was in good hands in his absence. John, we love you brother.
Rest easy John, we have the watch.
