Highway 66 between Morgan and East Canyon is currently closed due to a mud slide. Please check with UDOT on when it opens again.

UPDATE: All north end Day-Use areas will remain closed through Saturday, August 22 and all north end camping remains closed through Friday, August 21, due to nearby wildfire activity. All day-use rentals from August 8 – 22 and reservations from August 8 – 21 on the north end affected by the fire will be refunded.

Road Access & Closures:
Highway 65 and 66 are now fully open and the park is accessible from any route.

🚨EVACUATION NOTICE 🚨

August 8, 2026 - An evacuation order has been issued for the north end of East Canyon State Park, including Dixie Creek Campground and Day-Use areas, due to nearby wildfire activity. All visitors in these designated areas are instructed to evacuate immediately.

Road Access & Closures:
🔴 Highway 66: Closed to all traffic while emergency crews respond to the incident.
🔴 Highway 65 (from Henefer): Closed.
✅ Highway 65 (from Parley’s Canyon): Open - currently the only active route to and from the park.

Facilities along Highway 65, including Big Rock Campground, River’s Edge, Mormon Flats, and Large Spring Group Campground currently remain open and unaffected.

Campers holding current reservations who are departing the park may relocate to camp on the beach at Echo State Park free of charge.

Fire conditions remain dynamic and can shift rapidly. For public safety and emergency operational efficiency, please adhere strictly to all posted closures.

⚠️ ENTRANCE GATES CLOSED ⚠️

August 7, 2026 — North entrance gate to East Canyon State Park is temporarily closed due to wildfire activity affecting park areas, including Dixie Creek Campground, the beach area, and the boat ramp. Highway 66 is also closed while emergency crews and firefighters work the incident.

Visitors currently in the park may continue to recreate and leave freely, but re-entry will not be permitted. Facilities along Highway 65, including Big Rock Campground, River’s Edge, Mormon Flats, and Large Spring Group Campground remain open and unaffected.

Fire conditions can shift rapidly. For your safety, please respect all closures.

Did you know that East Canyon State Park has a direct connection to Utah’s Pioneer Day?

In 1847, the first party of Mormon Pioneers traveled on the same trail previously taken by the Donner-Reed party before settling in today’s Salt Lake Valley. This trail, now called the Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trail, followed East Canyon Creek, which lay in the center of what is now the East Canyon Reservoir before it was filled in 1966. An account from William Clayton, a pioneer, clerk, and scribe traveling with Brigham Young’s party, described East Canyon Creek as particularly difficult to traverse due to its rough terrain and voluminous vegetation at the time.

While you celebrate Utah’s Pioneer Day, reading accounts of the Mormon Pioneer parties that traveled across the country before settling in today’s Salt Lake Valley can be fascinating. It is also very fascinating to learn about previous human settlements in the modern boundaries of Utah, the oldest were the Paleoindians around 12,000 years ago. It is believed that the Paleoindians may have also traveled near or around the East Canyon Area.

Utah has a vast history of human settlement. Some of the most major groups of human settlement include the Paleoindians (Approx. 12,000–10,000 years ago); Desert Archaic Peoples (Approx. 10,000–3,500 years ago); Ancestral Puebloan Peoples (300 BCE–1,300 CE); Fremont Culture (600–1,300 CE); Shoshonean Speaking Peoples (Shoshone, Gosiute, Ute, Paiute) (1,200 CE–Current); Athabaskans Speaking Peoples (Diné (Navajo); Lipan, Jicarilla, and Mescalero Apache) (1,500 CE–Current); Spanish-European Exploration (1540–1829 CE); Mormon / LDS Settlement (1847 CE–Current).

When celebrating Utah’s Pioneer Day this year, please remember to practice safe recreation in our parks, follow current fire safety regulations, and learn about the history of human settlement in modern-day Utah. Utah is home to so many amazing cultures, people, and traditions. It can be very fulfilling to learn about the state’s extensive human history on this fantastic holiday.
