Florida panthers and Bobcats both roam Caracara Prairie Preserve, where they hunt, rest, raise young, and move through the landscape. Although they’re rarely seen by visitors, volunteer Tom Mortenson’s trail cameras give us a glimpse into their lives. Connected conservation lands like Caracara Prairie Preserve and are essential for these native cats.

Can you spot the differences between the two cats? Panthers are much larger with long tails, while bobcats are smaller with short, “bobbed” tails and tufted ears. 🐾📸

These trail camera photos from Red Maple Swamp Preserve capture just a few of the wildlife species that call this preserve home. While this preserve does not currently have public access, it provides important habitat for wildlife to hunt, travel, rest, and raise their young with minimal disturbance.
From Bobcats and Alligators to Coyotes, White-tailed Deer, Raccoons, and River otters, there’s always someone passing by the camera. These trail cameras help Conservation Collier land managers monitor wildlife activity and better understand how animals use the preserve throughout the year. 📸

Caracara Prairie Preserve hiking trails will be closed today, 8/18/2026, as Conservation Collier staff and partners conduct a prescribed burn. This prescribed burn aims to reduce fuel levels on-site to lower wildfire risk and enhance habitat for fire-dependent wildlife such as the Osceola Turkey, White-tailed deer, Sandhill Crane, Florida Panther, and more! Smoke may be visible near the preserve. Trails will re-open after the burn.

Another year of restoration at Barfield Burrows🌿🌸
With the help of Conservation Collier staff and volunteers, we planted over 400 native plants, including blazing stars, sea grape, railroad vine, sand live oaks, pigeonberry, frogfruit, and many native grasses!

These plantings support pollinators, provide forage for Gopher tortoises, reduce erosion, and help restore Barfield Burrows to a healthy mosaic of coastal dune/scrub and maritime hammock habitats while limiting the spread of invasive species.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this project a success! 🌱💚

Conservation Collier’s smaller preserves are just as important as the larger ones, both protecting wildlife habitat and preserving green space across Collier County 🐛

Explore Alligator Flag Preserve in Naples, where a 1-mile trail winds through pine flatwoods and cypress swamp. The landscape transforms with the seasons as water levels rise and fall, and right now the trail is dry and ready to explore! Watch for soaring birds of prey overhead, and don’t miss the airplants hidden among the trees 🍃🦋
