Department History
The roots of law enforcement in Bushkill Township date back to 1813, when George Stadler was elected as the township’s first constable. For more than a century, constables served as the primary law enforcement presence, handling local disputes and maintaining public order in the rural Pennsylvania community. It wasn’t until 1953, when Bushkill Township transitioned from constabu

lary service appointing Tom Nottle as its first full-time police officer, establishing the foundation for a more formalized police department. This marked a turning point in how public safety was managed, transitioning from part-time, elected constables to a structured, professional police force. The history of the Bushkill Township Police Department between 1953 and 1971 is relatively unknown due to Township records being destroyed by a flood. By 1972, the department had grown to require more leadership, and Howard Kostenbader was appointed as Chief of Police. Chief Kostenbader served with distinction until his retirement in 2003. At which point Stanley J. Coopersmith took the helm and was instrumental with technological advances within the department until his retirement in 2013. Captain Michael McLouth was promoted to Chief of Police in August 2013, and became the department's fifth chief. The police department has grown and modernized. It now offers a wide array of services and specialized units, including Investigations, K9, Motorcycle, Drone, Community Services, School Resource Officer, and Motor Carrier Enforcement. Today, the Bushkill Township Police Department is a full-time, full-service law enforcement agency, responsible for protecting the lives and property of residents within the 25.3-square-mile municipality. The department is accredited through the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (PLEAC), a distinction that affirms its ongoing commitment to the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and community service.

🚔 Cops & Runners 5K & 3K Run/Walk 🏃‍♂️

The Bushkill Township Police Association is excited to host its first-ever Cops & Runners 5K Run & 3K Run/Walk! This exciting community event will bring together runners, walkers, law enforcement officers, families, and friends for a morning of fitness and community spirit.

🗓️ Saturday, October 10, 2026 @ 9:00am
- Race Day Registration begins at 7:45am
📍 Bushkill Township Firehouse
- Start & Finish will be at the Firehouse
🚔 Police Escorted Course
⏱️ PR-Friendly Course

Participants will have 3 divisions to choose from:

- 5K Run: General
- 5K Run: Law Enforcement
- 3K Run/Walk: General

We especially encourage active and retired law enforcement officers from throughout the area to join us and represent your agency in the 5K Law Enforcement Division! Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just looking to have some fun, we would love to have you there.

*$35 per participant through October 2, 2026
*$40 per participant beginning October 3, 2026
*Same-day registration will be available

👕 Race T-Shirt:

Every participant who registers on or before September 25, 2026 will receive an official Cops & Runners 5K T-shirt!

🥪 Breakfast After the Race:

After crossing the finish line, stick around and enjoy some breakfast! The Bushkill Township Volunteer Fire Company will have delicious breakfast sandwiches available for purchase.

We'll also offer our chicken dinners at this event as well. Platters will be $15 each and include:
1/2 Chicken, Baked Potato, Coleslaw, & a Roll

And just like that, Bushkill Township’s 2026 National Night Out has come to an incredible close!

The weather was perfect, the turnout was AMAZING, and we couldn’t have asked for a better evening celebrating with our community.

We want to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who made this event such a success. To our residents, food vendors / food trucks, community agencies, fellow first responders, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who attended—thank you for spending the evening with us. Your support, enthusiasm, and community spirit are what make National Night Out such a special event year after year.

We would like to give a huge thank you to this year’s sponsors: Allstate Septic, Jump Around Party Rentals, Wilson Products, Crayola, Sunny Sips, and Nadia and Val (Facepainting)! We are so appreciative of your continued support of our event!
