We will be monitoring the weather closely, and hope all of you do, too. They're saying the main hazard is expected to be damaging winds this evening. If it starts to look like particularly dangerous storms start heading our way, a shelter will be opened at the New Salem Auditorium. We will make an announcement here if that needs to happen. Keep an eye on the weather and stay safe!

🚨New Salem Fire Department Extinguishes Grass Fire🚨

New Salem Fire Department was dispatched to a grass fire approximately 10 miles east and 2 miles north of New Salem around 345 pm Wednesday afternoon. Our first two units were enroute to the call around 350 pm. A deputy from Morton County Sheriff's Office arrived on scene and advised crews that the fire would likely require the department's tanker for additional water. Another page was struck requesting the tanker and additional firefighters. The two first-arriving units found heavy smoke and a northward advancing fire being pushed by south winds gusting to 35 mph, and began attacking the fires flanks. They made initial knockdown of the fire, and stopped its advance which was only about a mile south of a farmyard. Thick dead grass mixed with newly green grasses made full extinguishmemt challenging, but the additional units arrived, and crews controlled the fire by 500 pm. Firefighters then did extensive mop up of hot spots in the fire perimeter before clearing the scene by 630 pm. In total approximately 15 acres burned in the fire. New Salem Fire Department responded with 15 firefighters and 7 units (Attack 1/9050, Brush 1, Brush 2, Brush 3, Attack 2, Tanker 1, and Tanker 2). The department is also grateful to a landowner for bringing additional water to the scene in case it was needed.

If you heard sirens or saw us leaving town, crews were responding to a grass fire north of New Salem about 8 miles. Our first units were enroute within 3 minutes! Thanks to the help of a landowner and his tractor, and our fast response with multiple units including Attack 1, Brush 1, Brush 2, Tanker 1, and Tanker 2, the fire was quickly contained at around 1.5 acres. This goes to show the importance of a fast response on these warm, windy days. If you see a fire, call 911 right away!

Red Flag Warning this afternoon and evening! Be extra careful with anything that could cause a spark, and call 911 if you see a fire!

Gusty northwesterly winds and low relative humidity will lead to critical fire weather conditions for much of North Dakota today, with near critical fire weather conditions expected elsewhere.

Today is International Firefighter's Day, a day when we celebrate firefighters everywhere and thank them for all they do. But we are just a little biased toward the nearly 40 current and many past firefighters with New Salem Fire Department, who volunteer their time, energy, and every part of themselves to make our department one we're quite frankly damn proud of! The gear and trucks wait quietly, but are always waiting for our firefighters to jump into action at a moment's notice, day or night. Thank you, firefighters everywhere, today and every day!

Our January training was not only focused on a couple of different skill areas, but included some friendly competition, too! We split into different crews, and each crew had to complete three timed challenges: Playing Jenga with our extrication tools (not as easy as it looks!), Removing a door from a vehicle for extrication, and Gearing up in all gear, donning air packs, and being on air ready to enter a structure fire. The times from all the crews were impressive! Just another way we prepare for the variety of calls we receive!
