Dear friends, family, neighbors, and supporters,

Unfortunately, tonight's results were not what we had hoped for. I want to congratulate Rep. Jason Hoskins for his win and Dr. Rakesh Ramakrishnan for his well-fought campaign.

When I was growing up under the Hafez al-Assad dictatorship in Syria, I was warned to never, ever talk about politics. "The walls have ears" is a phrase every Syrian heard growing up, myself included.

How could I not take those words seriously? As just a young girl, I was woken up in the middle of the night by secret police armed with Kalashnikovs rummaging through my shelves for banned books. I witnessed a government massacre of peaceful protesters right in front of my home — the bullets lodged themselves in our shutters. Men in my neighborhood would constantly end up missing, never to be heard from again.

The fear of politics never left me, even when I fled Syria for the freedom of the United States and began my family in Michigan, right here in State Senate District 7. I stayed as far away from politics as possible.

Then, in 2011, the Syrian Revolution began. The people of Syria were sick and tired of the suffocation of tyrannical dictatorship. They faced machine guns, barrel bombs, and chemical weapons in their demands for freedom. Then, the unimaginable happened. An Assad regime tank fired on my elderly parents' home while they were still inside, just inches away from taking their lives instantly.

I knew I could no longer sit by in silence. I lobbied both Republicans and Democrats in Washington to pass critical human rights legislation targeting the Assad regime. That legislation, which crippled the Assad regime's coffers, eventually contributed to the collapse of the dictatorship that had silenced me for decades.

The election of Donald Trump and the far-right turn of the Republican Party shook me to my core, especially when I saw the eerie signs of authoritarianism that I knew so well emerging. I turned my advocacy back toward my community here in Oakland County to fight back against Trump's Republican Party and protect our fundamental rights and freedoms.

This brings us to today. Although our campaign was not successful, I am deeply thankful for the broad coalition of supporters who have supported our run from start to finish.

My work is not over. I will continue to support Democrats up and down the ballot in the upcoming critical general election. Beyond November, I'll continue to be out in our community fighting back against the GOP and advocating for what's right.

Thank you so much for the vote of confidence as your Democratic nominee for state senate. The enthusiasm is evident — our residents are fired up and ready to vote! I’m so proud that we nearly doubled the Republican turnout, which is a great sign going into November.

Congratulations to Abdul El-Sayed and Jocelyn Benson for winning their Democratic primaries last night. We are going to make one strong team for Michigan.

We have 90 days to finish this out and win re-election. With you by my side, I know we will. Let’s go do this!

Thank you so much for believing in me and the work I’m doing in Congress. I’m thrilled to continue this work alongside my friend Donavan McKinney in the 13th. Together we’re fighting for Medicare For All, affordability, an end to endless taxpayer-funded wars, and so much more to protect our dignity and constitutional rights. On to November!

Dear friends and neighbors,

Team Abbas extends our congratulations to District 2 communities as Abbas Alawieh will be our Democratic Nominee for the Michigan State Senate.

This morning, we are also extending our condolences to Abbas’s family. Last night, as we awaited the results, we learned of the passing of Hajj Kassem Bazzi, Abbas’s maternal grandfather and a beloved Dearborn community elder. May he rest in peace. Please keep Abbas’s family in your prayers as they take needed time together.

Abbas will share his own thoughts on the race soon. For now, thank you to every community that made this win possible: Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Allen Park, Melvindale, Taylor, and Detroit. This win is yours.
