At 08:48 hours, the Chester County 911 Center received calls reporting a subject trapped and injured in an auger machine in the West Grove Fire Company district. Hockessin Fire Company - Station 19 ,Engine 19 was already in the area on a cover assignment for Avondale Fire Company and responded along with Rescue 14 to assist.

Due to the strong communication and coordination between neighboring states, special operations personnel were able to monitor and listen to the radio transmissions. A New Castle County Special Operations Technician/ Emergency Department physician, along with other members, coordinated with Delaware State Police aviation unit to be directly taken to the scene to assist.

Upon arrival, crews found that a worker had fallen into an auger and had been impaled. Fire department companies on scene worked to cut away the sides of the machine and used a specialized system to carefully remove both the victim and the auger from the equipment.

Delaware State Police Trooper 4 then transported the patient to Christiana hospital with NCC special operations member onboard along with a physician from Pennsylvania.

Incidents like this highlight how critical seconds can be. New Castle County Special Operations is a unique team with the resources and capabilities to assist neighboring states and departments when situations like this occur.

SOC Sunday :“What is SOC Sunday, you may ask?”

SOC Sunday is typically held on the first Sunday of each month, when the HACSR team conducts a morning training session covering a variety of topics. Today’s focus is victim pick-offs, with the HACSR team performing hands-on evolutions to sharpen their skills.

The New Castle County Special Operations Team is also unique in that it includes ALS providers and EMS hospital physicians who are trained to the technician level and actively serve as part of the team.

26 personnel attended training today.

This past week, the Surface Water Division of the New Castle County Special Operations Team took part in ice rescue training. The training covered ice evaluation, victim removal, and self-rescue techniques. These sessions serve as valuable refreshers and help strengthen coordination between all participating agencies.

Remember: No ice is ever truly safe ice. With recent temperature fluctuations, the risk on ponds, lakes, and rivers increases. Always assume the ice is unsafe and use extreme caution.
